These are the outstanding games. They have to few to zero flaws, do something different and do it well, or use old gameplay elements to near perfection; titles that most gamers would consider successes like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Silent Hill 2. Metal Gear Solid 4 delivered a wonderfully atmosphere coupled with unique plot progression. It had a few minor problems, but it wasn’t enough to be a detriment to the overall experience of the game. Silent Hill 2 sent the gamer on a psychopathic roller coaster throughout the game’s title city. The game alienates the player with noises and haunting environments, but the combat was cumbersome. However, the game’s focus on flight instead of fight, its multiple endings, and its ability to get inside the gamers head made the combat a side note.

The B range. These are games like Devil May Cry 4. These titles have few problems, and are extremely fun to play, but don’t really pass the line of an “A” title. Devil May Cry 4 is an insanely fun and challenging game, but its difficulty alienates certain gamers, and while some enjoy it, it can be too hard to times to be entertaining for the majority of players, not to mention the sub-par level design that doesn’t match up to the quality of it’s predecessors.

This would be a C. This is where a majority of the games we play lie. These titles are “good” at best. Games like Magnetica and Eat Lead reside here because, while they can be fun to play, they don’t do anything to warrant being great, or perfect. These games have certain issues that keep them from passing into the upper levels of the scale. Eat Lead had a lot of issues in terms of originality and longevity that made it difficult to complete the game, which ultimately debilitated some of the gameplay.

Forgettable
3-4.9 on the scale of one to ten would be a D, and are the “bad” games. We gave Sonic and the Black Knight a 3 because the game was far too short, its controls were atrocious, and it didn’t offer anything besides a wagglefest gone wrong. But, the game was still playable with extremely small sections that were mildly entertaining.

Destroyable
So the first 0-2.5 points on the scale (zero doesn’t really exist), the game is a failure. This is a game that either doesn’t work properly, exhibits a multitude of bugs, isn’t fun to play, or is unplayable. An example of a game in this category would be E.T for the Atari (or Black Sigil). This game didn’t work half the time you played it and when it did work…it wasn’t fun at all.
