Today Capcom revealed that the first batch of DLC for its ever popular, duct taped fueled zombie kill-a-thon, Dead Rising 2 will hit sometime this December. Bringing back the protagonist from the original Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2: Case West sees Frank West team up with Chuck Green to get to investigate the pharmaceutical company Phenotrans.

In terms of gameplay, Case West will allow two-player co-op. If you happen to be friendless, like myself, the AI will control one of the player. Read more… »

It’s the announcement Battlefield: Bad Company 2 veterans have been waiting for: the release dates of the recently announced Vip Map Pack 7 and Vietnam expansion revealed back at E3 in June.

Vip Map Pack 7, which contains four new maps including fan favourite Oasis from the original Bad Company, will be available December 1st (that’s tomorrow), and should provide the perfect excuse to get back into the excellent multiplayer action of Bad Company 2.

Vietnam on the other hand (which features four new Vietnam maps along with a host of new weapons and vehicles) will deploy on December 21st for the consoles and December 18 for PC on Steam EA’s online store, retailing for $14.99/£9.99 or 1200 Microsoft points.

Since the dawn of video games, gamers have been fascinated with the concept of a seemingly “infinite” experience – a game that had no end. Some accepted the concept that classics like Robotron could not be beaten. However, some brave souls defied the odds, spent small fortunes in quarters, and discovered something called a “killscreen“. Once gaming became more and more mainstream, and eventually, into people’s homes, the concept of creating an unbeatable game to eat up giant stacks of quarters was over, and titles like Smash TV started the trend of horde shooters that had an actual ending. As time passed however, the focus again shifted to mystifying “unending” horde modes.

Gears of War 2 (which was released just days before World at War oddly enough and included a very small zombie level that hadn’t taken off yet) championed modern day horde modes, and introduced the concept of an infinite cycle of death shared traditionally by four players. Despite the fact that you couldn’t really “win”, modern day gamers eat these modes up with the same fervor that Steve Wiebe has whenever he reaches Donkey Kong’s killscreen. Recently, developer Treyarch has managed to top every horde mode on the market: read on to find out why.

Things have been rather quiet since the launch of Sony’s PlayStation Move controller, with fears that Microsoft’s hands-free Kinect device would steal the limelight. It’s encouraging, then, to hear from a new Sony press release that the controller has now managed to sell over 4.1 million units worldwide since its launch two months ago in the US, Europe and Asia and just one month ago in Japan, though this only includes the controller and camera bundle rather than the standalone controller.

Unsurprisingly, Sony are rather chuffed after previously downplaying the potential initial sales of Move and look ahead to 2011:  ”The number not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going in to the holiday season and to the year 2011.

For comparison, Microsoft’s Kinect has sold 2.5 million during its first month. Begun, the motion war has.

EA and DICE have set out the contents of their latest update to Battlefield Bad Company 2.  Coming to the PC and Xbox 360 this patch offers some substantial updates and improvements.  Not only that but it will pave the way for the release of VIP map pack 7 and the much anticipated Vietnam modification.  No word as yet on a PS3 patch but you have to presume a similar update will be mirrored on Sony’s machine.

These words may not seem so synonymous with video game publishers, especially given several titles that have recently been released to the ire of many a gamer. As an example, just search “The Force Unleashed II rushed” to find reviewers and fans alike commenting on how the game reeks of poor quality most likely because of deadline pressures dealt to the developers. While we’re not saying outright that LucasArts set an unbelievably short deadline for The Force Unleashed II, we are nodding to a very real occurrence that forces great studios to make horrible games (for another example, search Krome Studios).

One of the biggest publishers in the industry, EA Games, riots against this phenomenon. Amongst comments on work culture and the extinct movie-game sub-industry, president Frank Gibeau gave the most logical explanation on how great games are made: if developers are given more time, they turn out better quality.

Time Crisis titles have always been the primary attraction of any trip to the arcade in my lifetime. There is just something magical about those cheap plastic light guns and a friend by your side. Now, with the MadCatz PlayStation Move gun accessory instead of the cheap plastic light gun wired to the arcade unit, it was my sincere hope that Time Crisis: Razing Storm would be capable of capturing some of that nostalgia and delivering it into the comfort of my own home.

With three titles bundled into one package, Time Crisis: Razing Storm is the second light gun game to be offered to early adopters of PlayStation Move after The Shoot. With a limited amount of games around the time of its launch, one can only hope that the purchase is justified with good software. Unfortunately though, Time Crisis: Razing Storm in no way eases the woes of Move owners. Read more… »

Donkey Kong Country will always have a special place in my heart. I not only fondly remember the first time I ever played it, but I remember just about every session of the game I’ve ever had. The game was just so ahead of it’s time in terms of the visual style, and was one of the hardest, most rewarding games on the platform. Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, at least, managed to meld a perfect union of challenge and flair; enchanting you while it punished you at the same time.

So, with all those expectations, does DKC: Returns live up to the original’s name? I’d answer with a resounding “yes”. Read more… »

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s studio director, Mick Hocking revealed that the Playstation 3 will soon play host to more than 50 3D titles. “[A]nd this number is growing fast,” he told magazine Develop. Hocking explained that many industries are investing heavily in the technology and that once consumers see the sheer power and range of what it has to offer, people will come flocking — not only to 3D gaming, but to 3D technology as a whole implemented into film, television shows and even websites.

We have already seen the film industry embracing it with the likes of Avatar, the more recent Megamind and soon to be released Tron: Legacy. Despite this, there is still reluctance on the public’s side mainly because of the price tag. Tickets are double the regular cost and the average 3D TV resides in the neighborhood of about $3,000 (glasses not included). But let’s look ahead, as Hocking does.
