Even though it was three years ago, its seems as it was only yesterday that Microsoft unleashed its newest console onto the market, marking the era of high definition gaming. One short year later, Nintendo and Sony jumped into the fray, finally making the “next generation” the current generation. Now only two years later, we have already have begun to hear rumblings of the next console generation and this disheartens me. I feel as though we just have begun to receive the games that take advantage of all that the consoles have to offer. Seeing what this generation offers has left me with one question: Where do we go from here?
Zombies are hot. One glance at any message board specializing in nerd sub-culture and it’s easy to see that Zombies are the Prada of the geek world. Suffice it to say, ninjas are out. Equally as popular in today’s gaming climate is cooperative play, more specifically, the online variety. Left 4 Dead, from Half-Life publisher Valve, serves to combine cooperative play and zombies into one fantastic yet frantic experience that’s completely unique at the same time.
2008 isn’t over, and neither is our newly created backlog brought on by the tidal wave of games released in the last few months. A shrink wrapped copies of games I don’t care about are waiting to get their turn in the disc drive, but unfortunately for them and our sanity, we at Gamerlimit.com are always looking forward, no matter how great the risk of death by exhaustion. We’re taking a look at 5 games coming out in quarter 1 of 2009. 5 games bold enough to be released after the holiday season. 5 games that are coming out long after gaming fatigue has already kicked in.
Around a week ago, The Gamer Limit announced its first habitual feature series, the ‘Weekly NitPik’. Now, after Call of Duty: World at War has had its torment, it’s time for CoD’s sister series, Battlefield, to bravely step up onto the chopping block! It’s time to NitPik.
On November 21st 2004, the Nintendo DS was launched to a very welcoming standing ovation, not only did this mark the start of gaming’s seventh generation, but it also set in motion a revolutionary change in games themselves.
Mortal Kombat has had a tattered history; its first 4 iterations were some of the first games targeted by the “Video Games beget Violence” crusaders. The next few titles in the series were notable deviations in the formula, branded as unremarkable fighters using unremarkable mini-games as a crutch. Much doubt has been cast upon the newest title, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, especially with the inclusion of DC Superheroes resulting in the omission of the gruesome fatalities of old. Having played the game for many hours, I can safely say that MK vs. DC is not a deviation, it’s not a gimmick, and it should be titled Mortal Kombat 4.
Activision a publisher that loves sequels has announced a new line up of true sequels to come. One of the major announcements was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which is being developed by Infinity Ward. No surprise here since Modern Warfare was such a huge success. Amongst other titles Activision has also announced sequels such as Guitar Hero V, a not yet titled Tony Hawk game and some other news about Bizarre Creations new project an original IP racing game that mixes a few familiar idea such as “Forza meets Mario Kart. MTV Blog has also learned of a rumor that Bizarre is working on a racing game based on the James Bond universe.
If you were to ask any serious video game enthusiast about which game they consider to be the king of fighting games, 99.9 percent of the time you’re going to get the same answer, and here’s a hint: it’s not going to be the one with the word “king” in the title.

Style over substance is the theme of Activision’s newest entry into their long running Spider-Man series. Keeping the open world aspect of previous Spidey games, Web of Shadows institutes a fresh new combat system that allows Peter Parker to beat down foes like never before. While the combat serves to keep things interesting, Web of Shadows eventually falls victim to the same trappings of its predecessors: the game is technically sloppy, the majority of the quests are vastly uninteresting, and there just isn’t anything interesting to do in this world.
Boom Boom Rocket is one of the latest games in Bizarre Creations library of XBLA and PSN titles. As soon as you start up the game you’ll see that it’s been developed by the same people that brought you Geometry Wars, the games colorful display mocks Geo Wars fun style and gameplay as well. The game only costs $10 on PSN and 800 precious Microsoft points for XBLA.
It’s been over 2 years since each console manufacturer has given us the consumer a choice of a system to buy. You have Microsoft’s white behemoth the Xbox 360, the Sony George Forman grill and well the family oriented Nintendo Wii, which is easily trumping the competition and has the biggest lack of software out of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
Each console does offer something unique to the gamer though. The Wii gives you an experience unlike any other where even the oldest come together to share the fun gaming moments from their early days of childhood. The Xbox 360 offers a great line up of games that are multiplatform and some great exclusives such as critically acclaimed Gears of War 2 and Lion Head’s Fable II. Than there is Sony’s PS3, everything that it was meant to be but falls short of peoples confidence to take the money out of their wallets and buy a PS3. What could Sony be doing wrong that’s not making the consumer want to buy a PS3. Let’s take a look.
