There are two main types of advanced imaging technology in use today: millimeter wave and backscatter.
Backscatter units use low-level X-rays to create a reflected image of a passengerís body on the unitís display monitor. The image basically looks like a chalk etching, with fine-grained anatomical details.
Millimeter wave machines use electromagnetic waves to create a three dimensional black and white image. The image looks like a somewhat fuzzy photographic negative.
