When I first heard about Dead Rising way back in 2006, my imagination cooked up thousands of ways to have fun in the game. I mean, zombies in a mall where almost anything could be a weapon… What more could any horror/gaming fan ask for? Unfortunately, the reality of the situation was that, despite being an enjoyable game, the first Dead Rising was not my ideal Dawn of the Dead simulator.

Well, four years have passed since the first Dead Rising hit and I have to say it’s good to know that Capcom is willing learn from their mistakes. Dead Rising 2 still isn’t at a place where I’m ready to call it perfect, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Read more… »

Who gets tired of shooting zombies?  No one, am I right?  Well to be honest zombie games are starting to become the new World War II setting of this generation in my opinion. Though  if you are still in need of extra zombie action then the best place still has to be the Left 4 Dead series of titles from the people’s developer, Valve.

Valve made us all aware recently that the new “The Sacrifice” DLC would be coming really soon.  Well they’ve gone and elaborated on “real soon”, turning it in to a firm date.  That being the 5th October.

In an interview published today, Microsoft Games Studios’ general manager Dave Kuehmann commented on some criticism that PC gamers have been sending towards the gaming giant, pertaining to their commitment to develop games on the platform. According to Kuehmann, “It is our job to lead the way on PC” but admitted “we need to step up.”

To be fair, I probably should list the full quote. He said, “There’s been a fair bit of criticism aimed at Microsoft that we were spending a lot of our focus on console, and we need to be putting resources behind PC as well. Other companies should look to Microsoft for leadership, but I’m not sure they do. It is our job to lead the way on PC. And in some ways we are doing that and in other ways we are not. So we need to step up.” Read more… »

UPDATE: The comic has been released and can be found here.

Some of you may remember when I posted a little news item about Left 4 Dead getting a little back story courtesy of a four-part online graphic novel produced by Valve. Well, it just so happens that the first issue is scheduled to arrive today!

While it currently is not up on the Left 4 Dead blog just yet, Valve did post some pretty gnarly wallpapers based on the comic. As soon as the comic goes live, I’ll update this post with a link. Read more… »

Horror games are something that usually sound awesome in theory but often find themselves lacking a certain something when put into practice. A prime example of this is Doom 3. Now I loved Doom 3 as much as the next guy, but when you take a look at the horror aspects it almost always boils down to a monster in a closet. While having monsters jump out at you is definitely scary, it isn’t what I would truly call horror.

Luckily for gamers, the good folks over at Frictional Games are making huge strides in the field of actual horror games. Their latest endeavor, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, is an amazing step in the right direction for an actual interactive horror experience. Read more… »

Today Blizzard Entertainment revealed that within the first month of it’s release, StartCraft II has sold three million copies. The crazy thing is, one million of those copies were sold on launch day. What’s even crazier is that half of the three million were sold within the first 48 hours of release, setting “the record for fastest-selling strategy game of all time.”

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said, “We appreciate all the enthusiasm that players around the world have shown for StarCraft II. It was important to us to deliver an overall gameplay experience that was accessible, balanced, and fun, and it’s been gratifying to see how strongly the global community has already embraced the game.” Read more… »

Apparently StarCraft is getting some love at the university level. According to Kotaku, the University of Florida is using the real time strategy game to teach its students resource management skills. Before any of you slackers get excited (me included), the class featuring SC is only open to students in the honors college who have some familiarity with the game.

Taught by Nate Poling, a Ph.D candidate at UF, the class description reads, “With society becoming increasingly technology-based and fast-paced, it is important for professionals to be highly proficient in skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, resource management, and adaptive decision making. These skills are fundamental in Starcraft and therefore make the game a highly effective environment for students to analyze and take action in complex situations.” Read more… »
