It seems like every developer with a well known backlog of games is jumping on the HD collection bandwagon. First there was the God of War HD Collection, then the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD; now it seems that Capcom’s Devil May Cry series will be getting its own re-release.

While Capcom has yet to officially announce anything, the ESRB has rated the first three Devil May Cry titles for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Considering that the DMC series was a PlayStation 2 exclusive, branching out with a HD collection might get some younger gamers interested in the franchise.

Again, Capcom has yet to officially announce anything, however the company has recently opened up a fan art contest “promising the winners would be featured in an unannounced Capcom game.” Also it is coming up on the 10 year anniversary of the DMC series, making a re-release all the more plausible.

What do you guys think about this? In your opinion, does the evidence add up? Would you be interested in a DMC HD collection? Let us know what you think with a comment below.

Capcom is showing full force at this year’s gamescom going down in Germany’s fourth largest city, Cologne. Starting tomorrow, fans will get to see what newness they have brewing for upcoming titles like Asura’s Wrath. This includes a new trailer that has Asura taking on his former mentor, Augus, in what can be described as a testosterone filled battle complete with a great phallus reference that takes place on the moon.

Gamer Limit has the video coming soon. For now, you can enjoy the new screens that show off some stills of the battle, as well as some character profiles including Augus; Kalrow, an old man with a walking stick on wheels (why not?) and Sergei who reminds me of Flea from Chrono Trigger. So, without further ado …

[Update: Apparently they won't be coming to retail after all, as GameSpot once sugggested. While Capcom has no plans for physical release, they will be available on the PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Games on Demand for $19.99.]

Earlier today at the San Diego Comic Convention, Capcom announced that you’ll be able to get your mitts on HD remakes of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X come September. Resident Evil 4 HD will be landing in stores September 20th, with Code Veronica X HD arriving a week later on the 27th. Ah… I’ll buy them at a high price.

If you enjoy physically owning your games, both titles will be available at retail. But if you just want to experience the crisp Dreamcast/GameCube-era visuals straight away, they’ll also be available via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Games On Demand. So what’re ya buying, stranger?

Capcom released new screenshots for its upcoming title, Dragon’s Dogma, Tuesday. They feature a new take on the Golem — a giant stone juggernaut bent on destroying your character. The fact that it’s a giant made of stone isn’t new to the Golem mythos, but, the fact that it shoots a massive laser from its face is.

Dragon’s Dogma is a peculiar title, as many of the fantastic tropes that have been revealed thus far have typically belonged to the RPG. Capcom has gone out of its way to assure us that it is indeed not an RPG, but an action adventure.

That means players will rely on abilities — not dice rolls — to battle against the Golem, Griffon, Chimera, Dragon and whatever else the makers of Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 4 decide to throw into the amalgam. The fact that Dragon’s Dogma is an open world affair just adds to the genre mixing.

Now, without further ado, straight from the lands of Cassardis, here is your not-so-huggable-or-lovable-laser-faced-stone-giant.

We posted our review for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D earlier this week. Chris Carter thought the game was decent, but had some gripes. One of which was the fact that “save files are permanently ingrained onto your game’s cartridge”. Capcom’s actions in this regard have turned out to be highly controversial and caused quite a stir on the internet, believing this is the latest method to kill the used game market. In backlash, fans have review-bombed the title, leaving it with a rating of 1.5/5 on Amazon.

Capcom insists that “Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision”, but rather “RE Mercs was treated like an arcade fighting game. You unlock characters, levels, etc and they just stay unlocked as they would in an arcade machine. There was no hidden motive to prevent buying used copies. It’s not some secret form of DRM. It’s simply the way we designed the save system to work with the arcade type of gameplay.”

Believe what you may, but in either instance Capcom has really done themselves a disservice with this one. They’ve undoubtedly lost sales, turned off loyal customers, and regardless of their intent, have shown other publishers how to make their upcoming 3DS line-up immune to the used market.

While everyone was huddled around Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City, Gamer Limit sneaked in a lengthy session with the series’ upcoming handheld title. Resident Evil: Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS at once feels like a natural extension of the franchise, following Jill Valentine and her new partner, Parker Luciani.

Getting into this game will surely be easy both for diehard fans as well as those who had fell out of touch over the years. Whether there is a desire to play this game is another story altogether.

On the plus side, Revelations is visually stunning. The power of the hardware and the depth of 3D lend themselves to crisp graphics. Even with the smaller screen, players are sure to feel closer to the action, the world, the characters, etc.

At the same time, the touch screen relieves the player from having to pause the game for map viewing and inventory control. Map viewing, switching weapons and using items are as easy as tapping on the corresponding touch screen icon.

When it comes to puzzles, players can also expect to take part in some stylus action. In the demo, I had to open an electrical panel by tapping on the screws on the touch screen (meh). Then, I was greeted with a somewhat challenging puzzle where I had to reorganize power nodes to get the electricity to flow correctly (okay *nodding*). How the nodes got screwed up in the first place, especially since I was able to walk through that door moments before, is anyone’s guess.

The demo upped the tension by throwing ample amounts of those white-skinned, flesh bag enemies at me, while providing little ammo. The pressure to be precise with gunshots and conserve resources can be an anxious situation, especially with a mini-horde of monsters coming at you. This was the demo’s main strategy to get you to feel that ‘Survival Horror’ quality Resident Evil is known for. That’s it.

And when I say that’s it, I mean that was pretty much all the demo had to offer — enemies, puzzles and inventory conservation. First impression, Resident Evil: Revelations, minus the 3D and touch screen functionality, seems like the same ‘ol Resident Evil. Not much strikes me as surprising or all together engaging.

Capcom is promising a brand new storyline, of course, following Jill and Parker as agents of the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance). The majority of the action takes place on a seemingly abandoned freighter ship in search of Chris Redfield, timeline between Resident Evil 4 and 5.

The maritime setting will also introduce new underwater enemies. During a video screening of gameplay not available in the demo, we caught a glimpse of Jill’s partner in action, swimming through a portion of the ship, incapacitating humongous shrimp/stingray monsters with a brand new weapon — the pulse grenade.

Essentially a grenade of pure sound, it has been said to ensure an instant kill. To say the least, it all has me incredulous of the final product. Will the pulse grenade be balanced in the end, so not to make the game too easy? Will the storyline, puzzles, gameplay offer something new to make this a stand-out title? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Street Fighter X Tekken, one of the last frontiers of crossover fighting games, showed in full force at E3. The Capcom booth hosted 6 consoles and a big screen mainstage, complete with fighting sticks and long lines of eager gamers. The Capcom version of this double crossover, the demo featured familiar art style and gameplay from the latest installment of the Street Fighter franchise.

As expected, the biggest adjustment for fans of both titles has to be made when playing Tekken characters. However, it still promises an experience that is on track be one of the greatest crossovers yet.

Now, as you may already know, SFXT is a tag team based game. To get a feel for this feature as well as how a Tekken character acclimates to Capcom’s fighting ring, I chose Hwoarang and Ken. Apparently, these characters compliment each other very well.

As expected, Ken’s entire toolchest of moves is open and available to use; and one technique in particular, the Dragon Punch, plays well into Hwoarang’s aggressive and up close fighting style full of rushes and kicks. For the most part, Hwoarang’s moves carry over, translated into the traditional Street Fighter circular and zig-zag joystick motions. For a Tekken fan, this may take some getting used to; but the range and power of his trademark kicks is still there and you should find his balance in short time.

No matter what character is used, the tag feature offers more than just an opportunity to regain health. Using the launch combination (low, medium, high punch/kick) makes for a great tactic to start a juggle, pressuring the opponent and prolonging the immediate combination. One can also experiment with certain teams to find the right flow and accommodate style.

Unlike the cartoon-like launches in the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 crossover, there is a definite weight to the characters in SFXT. It makes sense for the Street Fighter world which is based more in technique and tactics, rather than hyper fast, ADD action. There is one downfall to the tag feature, in my opinion — once a character is taken out, the round is over, even though you have another in reserve. In the end, this is one complaint to an overall positive reaction.

Not included in the demo was a promise for the same online play features found in Super Street Fighter IV as well as some surprises. As to what the surprises are, Capcom has set its PR to slow leak, already revealing Cole McGrath from the InFamous franchise as an exclusive playable character for PS3, with other characters sure to be revealed soon. You want more on the current character lineup? See the following E3 trailer.

Earlier this afternoon, I had the opportunity to sit down and play Capcom’s latest spinoff in the Resident Evil series. Capcom has partnered with SOCOM Confrontation developer Slant Six Games to push the series in an entirely new direction with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Together, they have created the franchise’s first third-person team-based shooter and it looks like it’s shaping up to be something special.

The game follows the Umbrella Security Service (USS) through the Raccoon City Incident – previously seen from the perspective of Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2 and Jill Valentine in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Operation Raccoon City features three-way competitive multiplayer between US Spec Ops, Umbrella security forces, and the infected threat of zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons. While at the Capcom booth I had the chance to sit down for a fifteen-minute single-player demo.

Hit the jump for my impressions.

Before the clock started counting down, the demo gave players the opportunity to choose from a variety of USS classes, including: surveillance, reconnaissance, medics, field scientists, demolition, and assault, each of which features their own unique special abilities. There were also a variety of weapons to choose from, assault rifles, sub machineguns, shotguns, you name it. After tooling up a recon trooper with a cloaking ability and a sub machinegun that was a little less powerful than I would have liked I was off to … a zombie-infested city in ruins.

The game will draw a great deal of comparisons with titles like Gears of War and Left 4 Dead, blending third person shooting with tactical gameplay elements. While I was playing by myself, I can definitely see a lot of room for players to get their respective online platform of choice with a few friends and tear through the decrepit city, laying waste to the zombies and government troops that lay in their path.

There were a variety of enemies, from more commonly seen zombies and government troops to bio-organic weapons such as lickers and hunters (who are fairly difficult to take down). You definitely feel the three-sided nature of the combat as well. In one instance I was pinned down by sharpshooters only to have zombies come to my rescue, allowing me to pop out of cover and quickly dispatch both parties.

While the shooting controls were competent and decent enough (I could have used some time to customize them to my liking), I really enjoyed the demo’s melee kills. These kills changed depending on the speed at which you come at an enemy. For example, using a melee attack whilst running will result in a football-like tackle as opposed to the more stationary knife kills. Knifing can become much more brutal with a few quick button presses. With these brutal melee attacks, the third person perspective changes and zooms in to give you a detailed look at the blood and gore.

Speaking of which, Operation Raccoon City looks beautiful. Whether it’s cutting a zombie to ribbons or turning an explosive barrel into a fiery inferno, the visuals look great. Cutscene’s look particularly good, and the close-ups of Kennedy and Redfield show a similar visual style to those of Wii rail-shooter spinoff Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Overall, I was very pleased with how Operation Raccoon City is shaping up. I’m looking forward to further announcement regarding the title, and its release later this year.

Today, Capcom announced that the 3D Edition of Street Fighter IV has shipped one million copies worldwide. While that figure refers to the number of units they’ve sent to retailers, as opposed to how many copies sold, it definitely means they’re off to a good start. It’s nice to see that Capcom is throwing their support behind Nintendo’s newest handheld right out of the gate.

They’re not stopping there though, Mega Man Legends 3, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D are still in the pipeline for 3DS releases. Capcom fanboys and 3DS owners sure have plenty to look foward to in the near future.

Here’s the new trailer for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. The trailer features Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker out in full force, battling several of the enemy types from Resident Evil 4. The game is looking absolutely fantastic, and its hard to believe something that pretty is coming out on a handheld.

Yet, I’m not entirely sold. Don’t get me wrong, the Mercenaries modes in Resident Evil 4 and 5 were a lot of fun. However, until now these bonuses have provided little more than a diversion to be offered alongside excellent standalone campaigns. Hopefully Capcom can fully flesh out the experience by the time the game joins the growing 3DS library.

Capcom pioneered the survival horror genre with the release of Resident Evil fifteen years ago, and revolutionized the third-person shooter genre with Resident Evil 4 in 2005. It will be interesting to see how contemporary takes on zombies, survival horror and third person shooters, which all arguably owe something to Capcom’s innovations, will be reflected in Operation Raccoon City as we come to know more about the title.
