My name is Shawn Evans, and I'm a 30 year old avid gamer who lives in Raleigh, NC. I have been playing video games since 1987, when my parents bought me my first video game system, the Atari 2600. Since then my love for gaming has grown a little more with each passing year. I currently own an XBOX 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, and DS, and I play each on a pretty regular basis. Recently my love for gaming has blossomed into a love of writing, which has brought me to Game Limit to be a senior writer. The rest, as they say, is history.

halo legends 1 Gamer Limit DVD Review: Halo Legends

There is no denying that the Halo series has become a video game cultural phenomenon that has helped define an entire generation of life-long gamers. Because of this, Microsoft has never been content to keep the Halo brand contained within the confines of just gaming. They have branched out, creating everything from toys, to clothing, books, and even their own line of Mountain Dew drinks.

It’s only natural then that their next big venture would be to bring the series to the small screen, in the form of a collection of seven animated short stories called Halo Legends.  Created by five of the top animation studios in Japan, this collection provides a glimpse into the Halo universe as never experienced before.

The question is, does Halo Legends compliment the games in a way that warrants it being in every Halo fan’s collection, or is it simply another attempt to milk the brand? Continue Reading… »

velvet revolution 1989 Replay Revolution: Making Games More Replayable

In a global economic recession, where the majority of games still cost $60 apiece, many people are constantly looking to get the most bang for their buck.  Here at Gamer Limit, we stress the importance of the longevity of games by including a separate score for it in our reviews, but games don’t necessarily have to be long to get high marks in this area.

One way developers can design their games to have more longevity is by making them more replayable, but unfortunately a lot of titles don’t fall into this category.  Developers would rather artificially make a game longer, or tack on multiplayer, than actually work to give a game replayability.  Well, it’s time for people to stand up and demand more from their games.  It’s time for a replay revolution. XmasHeader Gamer Limit’s 2009 Holiday Gift Guide for people you HATE!

Typically during the holiday season, people are scrambling around like busy little ants, trying to buy presents for their family and friends.  If any of these individuals have ended up on your naughty list, it can be difficult to decide what to get them. It’s an unfortunate reality that sometimes you have to buy presents for the people you hate, even if you don’t want to.  Those of you who have big families understand this perfectly.

Well this year, Gamer Limit has decided to help you empty your wallet by providing a list of gifts for those hated gamers in your life.  Givers beware, you should only give these games and gadgets to those who you despise most.  To gift them to someone you actually like would be a cruel act, for these are the worst of the worst the video game industry has to offer in 2009. Opinion: $100 Xbox Live could end the console war

Michael Pachter’s job is to predict the future of the video games industry, which entails making sweeping accusations that usually cause quite a stir.  As a guest on the most recent episode of Game Trailers’ Bonus Round, he kept his hot streak going with a new prediction that stunned everyone.  Apparently his crystal ball has informed him Xbox Live will eventually cost $100 a year.

Pachter bases this assumption on the fact the Xbox 360 has become deeply entrenched as the main online console for many gamers around the world.  With Microsoft’s hooks deep into us, these people would have no other choice buy to pay the money if the price went up.  Well I’m here to completely disagree with that statement, because I think increasing the yearly cost of Xbox Live could be the absolute worst thing for the system. PSPgo White

After the Playstation Portable’s first dismal year on the market, I don’t think many people expected it to ever have any sort of serious impact on the industry.  However, here we are five years later and Sony has just released the fourth and probably most significant version of the system: the PSPgo.

What makes this new portable gaming machine so important is that it marks the very first time a game company has released a device based solely off of digital distribution.  Making history doesn’t matter though if the system is badly designed with poor controls.  This begs the question, does the PSPgo deliver as a pure gaming machine, or should it be left on store shelves to sit and collect dust? Today is a landmark day in the history of video games.  For the first time ever a major video game company is releasing a system that is based purely off of digital distribution.  I am of course talking about the new Sony PSPgo.

To help celebrate this momentous occasion, I have created a video of me unboxing my brand new PSPgo for the very first time.  I also take the opportunity to compare the size of the system to that of the iPhone 3GS and the Nintendo DS Lite.

Don’t take my word for it though.  Click the video above to see for yourself.

drakes fortune uncharted Breaking Through Game LIMITations: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

[Make sure you check in every Saturday, as Gamer Limit will always have an interesting editorial for you to read!]

The video game market has become so oversaturated with huge numbers of titles that it can be hard to tell the good from the bad.  The only place most gamers can turn to is review scores, but unfortunately the majority fall between the 7.0 to 9.0 range.  What’s even worse is that the same game that is rated a 7.0 on one website will be rated a 9.0 on another.  How is a person supposed to know what makes a good game and what doesn’t.

This is where I come in.  I’m starting a new series entitled “Breaking through game Limitations”, which will take an in-depth look into past and present releases to explain what makes incredible games so great.  This series will not focus on the negative, but will instead strive to only examine the positive aspects of a game’s design. My hope is that you will take away from this an idea of what elements of great game design you should look for in future titles.

The first game I will be taking a look at for this series is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  To find out what developer Naughty Dog did to make this title so great, hit the jump. Continue Reading… »

header Tales from the Bargain Bin: Beyond Good and Evil

[Every Thursday, Gamer Limit gives you a blast from the past with either its Retro Reunion or Bargain Bin series]

It’s a sad truth that some of the best games ever made never really manage to sell a lot of copies.  These diamonds in the rough eventually find themselves sitting in the bottom of bargain bins all across the world, waiting for some lucky soul to pick them up and discover their true greatness.  One of these games is the highly acclaimed Beyond Good and Evil.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier Studios and released back in November of 2003 for PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC; BG&E was hailed by critics as one of the best games of the year.  Unfortunately, it did not resonate well with the public and posted horrible sales figures, quickly dropping off the charts into oblivion.  Since then, the title has garnered a cult following of beloved fans who adore both the game, and its incredible cast of characters.

Read on to find out more about this extraordinary bargain bin title, which deserves your attention. Continue Reading… »

ps3slim2 Opinion: Sony needs to reinvent its image with the PS3 Slim

With so many recent rumors flying around the internet about Sony announcing the PS3 Slim at next week’s Cologne Gamescom, it’s hard not to sit up and pay attention.  According to a deluge of “industry insiders”, the new compact system will finally usher in the oh-so-important price cut that everyone has been screaming for.

The general consensus seems to be that a lower price point is exactly what Sony needs to reinvigorate the system and bring in more sales, but I think these people are missing the big picture. Continue Reading… »

iphone Editorial: Why the iPhone might one day replace the DS and PSP

Until recently, I thought the idea of the iPhone as a portable gaming platform was a laughable matter at best.  Without any type of real control scheme, a weak processor, and a poor selection of games, how would it ever be able to compete with the likes of the DS or the PSP?  As far as I was concerned, it would never be popular enough for it to make any type of significant impact on the gaming industry.

Then something completely unexpected happened that changed everything and caused me to question all of the previous reservations I had about the iPhone as a portable gaming device.  Read on to find out more about this major break-through I had, and why I’m starting to change my mind. gamer fuel The Epic Battle Continues: Red vs. Blue Game Fuel Taste Test

If there is one constant in the video game universe, it’s that red will always battle blue.  This war of attrition has been fought from the rings of Halo to the fields of Azeroth.  No one is quite sure how this epic struggle for dominance first started, but everyone does agree that the only way it will end is in blood shed.

Recently the fine makers of Mountain Dew have decided to add to this ongoing struggle with their new Red and Blue Game Fuel.  Which side will win this battle to quench your thirst? Hit the break! Continue Reading… »

achievement unlocked mousepad p144945287843388630trak 400 Editorial: Achievements and trophies that change the way you play games

Most gamers all have completely different opinions when it comes to Xbox 360 achievements and PS3 trophies.  Some like them, some hate them and some just don’t really care.  One reason you see so many different opinions is because gamers can’t seem to decide whether achievements actually enhance the game play experience or not.  A large percentage of achievements are simply “busy work achievements”, which require more of a time investment then a skill investment.

Everyone once in a while though, an achievement comes along which totally changes the way a person must play a game.  To find out more about these types of achievements, hit the jump.
