Joe Madureira, famed comic book artist and creative director for the Darksiders series, announced that he’s leaving Vigil Games. After seven years at the studio he co-founded, Madureira made his announcement on Twitter.

In a longer post on his Facebook page, he elaborated, “After 7 long years and 2 hit games ( Darksiders BABY! ) I’m afraid the time has come for me to move on to new adventures. I could not be more proud of what we achieved, or the awesome people who helped build up this studio.” I really liked the weight and heft to Joe’s designs in Darksiders and Darksiders II. I wish both him and Vigil Games success in the future. So long and thanks for all the skulls.

Joe Fourhman / My problem with Darksiders was that it’s just plain cevltireay bankrupt. And I don’t mean by following a Zelda template that’s nothing, plenty of games are like that. Nintendo doesn’t hold a copyright on exploring dungeons. No, for me it was the bland, cliche character designs. Big angry boss monsters that take one step forward as the camera zooms in to showcase the thing screaming at you. Big angry lead character with blades and chains and pointy bits and lank hair and blood. It was a fill-in-the-blank assemblage of study hall scribblings by hair band dropouts. And then at the end, when it turned into Portal? Oh, man.Thing was, it was not a bad game technically. The gameplay was there, but the art direction was just one big pandering cliche.
