Today UK developer Rebellion Games, best known for their Aliens vs. Predator games, announced that it has opened up a new social division. This new branch of Rebellion will be responsible for creating games for Facebook and other social media outlets.

When asked about this new division, Co-founder Jason Kingsley said, “One thing that has become increasingly clear over the last few years is that gamers can’t be defined as just people who own consoles. People who use social media like Facebook or use smart phones all play games and this is an exciting opportunity that we want to explore.”

Despite being a new team, Rebellion’s social division is already hard at work on a Facebook game called Evil Genius. Based on the older PC title with the same name (one of my favorite games), players will take on the role of a James Bond-esque super villain. As of right now, details on the actual gameplay are being kept under lock and key. As soon as more info gets out, you can be sure I’ll post it.

What do you guys think about this? Do you think that more and more “mainstream” game development studios are going to be branching out into social media games? Do you think this is a good thing for the games industry? Let us know what you think with a comment below.

  1. I absolutely think that more developers are going to try to get on board this “social games” thing.

I hope that if any game is going to use FaceBook as a platform they will take note of all the disatisfaction that gamers are showing with the new ” Timeline ” pages..they dont work well for hardcore Mafia wars players thats for sure !!!

little more than cheer your team on, keep a score card, have a beer and a brat, watch the teletron, or acaullty watch what is happening on the diamond between pitches..its a lot of little things going on all the time , or just enjoy talking to the friends you came with or the ones that you make setting next to you at the game.
