Gamer Limit Banner

I like to go off the beaten path when reviewing games. I’m the sort who actively combs the new release calendar curious about the releases that never had the marketing muscle of the Call of Duty: Black Opss and the Bulletstorms of gaming.  When you turn over rocks sometimes you stumble across hitherto unnoticed gems like Ninjatown or de Blob. Other times you simply come across dead spiders and quickly put the rocks back down, which brings us to Lord of Arcana. I certainly hope Lord of Arcana enjoys its brief time in the spotlight because this mercilessly dull and tiresome game will be long forgotten when it fades from the recent release listings.

Lord of Arcana starts off with a traditional if forgettable character creation system: name, gender, hair style, voice, and so forth. Your mighty hero is then thrust into a series of climactic battles. Your finely honed swordplay, immense magical prowess and unmatched valor allow you to destroy opponent after opponent before you culminate in a titanic final battle where finally…you immediately get teleported to a new area with all of your powers taken away. Apparently you have just sacrificed your past life including weapons and skills to prove yourself as a successor to an ancient king.

In the wake of the recent earthquake in Japan and ensuing tsunami, the Shadows of the Damned developer has released a collection of songs called ‘Otomodachi’ in memory of those affected by the disaster. There are three songs in total, two of which are created by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and a third by Tak Hiraoka.

You can download the tracks from Grasshopper Manufacture’s facebook page. While they are free, the developer urges you to donate to aide in the disaster relief.

In case you missed our previous coverage, Slam Bolt Scrappers is an fantastic-looking puzzler / fighter that we previewed back in September. Its fun and frenetic gameplay was instantly striking and made it one of the most memorable titles on the PAX show floor.

If you’ve been looking forward to Fire Hose Games’ first title, the wait is finally over. After two and a half years in the oven Slam Bolt Scrappers is finished and has made its way to the PlayStation Network. Both the full game and a free demo are now available to download at your leisure.

About a month ago, I reported that Activision had killed off its Guitar Hero franchise “due to continued declines in the music genre.” Apparently Ubisoft has something to say about that. Today, the developer announced that it is currently working on a guitar based rhythm game call Rocksmith. Now before you call Rocksmith a Guitar Hero clone, please note that there are some major differences. Most importantly, you play Rocksmith with a real guitar, not some plastic toy.

Apparently Ubisoft has come up with some sort of converter that allows you to plug in your guitar cord into a USB drive. Now I know some of you are saying, “What about Power Gig: Rise of the Sixstring? That game let you play with a real guitar!” Please note that with Power Gig, you had to play using their plastic “guitar.” Sure it had strings and plugged into your console of choice, but it still wasn’t a real guitar. Also the fact that the gameplay was just trash didn’t help Power Gig‘s reputation. Read more… »

Following from the recent earthquake disaster in Japan, Sony has wisely opted to delay the forthcoming release of MotorStorm Apocalypse in both Japan and the UK thus far. It was previously due to launch in just 3 days time on March 18.

“Although we have shipped the game into the channel last week, given that we are able to do so, we have chosen to postpone the launch in the UK,” a Sony spokesperson commented. “ We are shocked and saddened to see the impact of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues within the Sony family, living and working throughout Japan.”

25 to 30 hours is the benchmark Rockstar is setting for the average time it’s going to take to complete L.A. Noire. This doesn’t include the side quests, a.k.a. ‘unassigned cases’, that take the player deeper into the world to reveal the stories of secondary characters. This doesn’t take into account DLC for that matter. That makes the main play time just enough to fill in a work week, if you made the game your full time job and only focus on finishing the main missions. For sure, L.A. Noire will go a long way for gamers looking for a deeper, richer experience.

This delectable tidbit came yesterday at PAX East during a press only closed-door session hosted by Rockstar (yet another reason why I’m kicking myself for not going). Lucky eyes were also graced with footage of “The Red Lipstick Murder”, an assigned case that helps fill in those 25 to 30 estimated hours. Get to play detective on May 17, when L.A. Noire releases in North America.

It’s Monday and that means another offering on Nintendo’s downloadable services. Usually we see more interesting titles hitting WiiWare while things like clocks and card games wind up on the DSi, but this week’s update bucks that trend. PopCap’s well-known tower defense title Plants vs. Zombies is now available on DSiWare. I suppose they need to do something to keep people interested in the DSi with the 3DS looming on the horizon.

Hit the jump for the rest of this week’s games.

Exactly one week ago I wrote up a little news story about how Rebellion Games was opening up a new social games division. At the end of the article I asked you guys if you thought more game developers were going to follow in Rebellion’s footsteps. Well, those of you who said yes were correct.

Today, developer Insomniac (best known for Resistance and Ratchet & Clank) announced that it has opened up a new social gaming division. Dubbed Insomniac Click, the new development studio will focus on creating games for the web and mobile devices. Read more… »

PlayOnline services for both Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI have been suspended to help conserve energy in Japan, after Friday’s devastating earthquake.

A statement has been made on the official Final Fantasy XIV website that provides more information. It mentions that the servers will be offline for at least a week and because of this players will not be charged throughout April.

This is following Konami’s decision to suspend the Metal Gear Online servers to help combat Japan’s energy shortage.

Konami have currently suspended the Metal Gear Online service following the major earthquake that hit Japan on Friday.

Japanese power companies had requested that the public limit their electricity use, particularly during peak hours. Konami responded by taking the MGO servers offline to help with the energy shortage.

Kojima Productions posted the following to their twitter account: “To conserve power we are temporarily stopping the MGO servers. Timing for the recommencement is TBD. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Today developer Hi-Rez Studios (best known for their MMO shooter Global Agenda) announced that it will be bringing PC gamers something they’ve been begging for for years; a new Tribes game.

Dubbed Tribes: Ascend, the new multiplayer shooter is described as “the multiplayer successor to the much lauded Tribes 2 and a re-introduction of the franchise to the gaming world.” For the old school Tribes fans out there, you can rest easy. Jetpacks, skiing and vehicles are all set to make a triumphant return. Read more… »
