Yesterday EA announced that, in an effort to become more environmentally friendly, it will no longer include printer manuals in game packages. According to EA, this move will reduce printed materials in its packaged goods by 40%.

Now before the fans of printed manuals start to freak out, EA has stated that all future manuals will be released in a digital format. In fact, you will now be able to access the manual while in game via the main menu and pause screens. If you’re like me and prefer read manuals when you’re not playing a game, EA will also make full digital versions available in multiple languages in the game manuals section on EA’s support site.

While I appreciate the effort EA is making to reduce it’s paper usage, I can’t help but think that the extra space in the game package will now be filled with various fliers trying to get you to register the product, buy the game guide, etc.

What do you guys think about this? Will you miss having a physical manual? Do you think this menu-accessible manual thing will take off? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

Save the trees!!!! Yeah right! They’re trying to save another form of green, that evil green, that dead presidents type of green. It’s ok, though. Manuals have been disappointing as of late. You don’t get the art, story, and other stuff they used to put in there. Best manual = Chrono Trigger manual. Peace!

    • Yeap Bolo is correctamundo. They save a buck by making no manual, you get inundated with BS special offers. But then again it doesn’t bother me too much because like Bolo said manuals have started to suck these days anyway… The special offers were always there too.

They still make manuals? Who even checks for those anymore? I remember the Super Mario World manual had amazing artwork.

  3. I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to this, and I think I’d miss my new-game ritual of thumbing through the manual and smelling its must.

  4. While I think the going green excuse is bull crap I really don’t care about manuals much anymore.

Complete crap, I miss the days when manuals were a thing of beauty. Developers/Publishers at one time used to care about every aspect of the game and experience. It’s a sad day, but I have to say I saw it coming a long way back.
