The strange history of Lost in Shadow, which saw the game begin as a budget downloadable title and suddenly switch to a full disc release, has brought about a very strange game. Its very compelling concept — taking control of a shadow that can only traverse the world of shadows that the real objects project — is one that grabbed hold of many gamers early on in its life. While many suggested that its conversion to a disc release had essentially ”sent the game to die,” some remained optimistic.

I belonged to the latter group and was glad to dig into the game for review. I expected a quirky platformer with some thought-provoking puzzles and, with any luck, a compelling story. I got none of these. Not even close. I’m going to tell you right now that this is going to be an unconventional review. It’s going to turn into a rant, and I know I’m going to be unable to stop it. Today developer Day 1 and publisher Warner Bros. announced that F.E.A.R. 3 has been delayed again. Once slated to arrive fall 2010, the spooky shooter was then pushed back to March 2011. Now F.E.A.R. 3 is scheduled to arrive on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime in May.

According to a statement from WB, “The F.E.A.R. 3 launch date will now be in May 2011, as we look to deliver the best possible game for our consumers.” Read more… »

Blimp: The Flying Adventures is not a terribly deep or substantial game. It’s a twenty level downloadable Steampunk 2D version of Crazy Taxi with bombs available for the PS3, PSP and iOS devices. If that sounds like your cup of tea hit the jump for the full review.

Dynamic Lights is the title of this short, short video posted Monday. It’s not much of an exciting title, let alone an exciting video. The excitement can instead be found in the tiny words at the top left corner just before you click on that play button, or right after the movie is done. It’s the point when you suddenly realize it’s not so much the video, but the game behind it. Using the new Unreal Engine 3, backed by Epic Games and developed by People Can Fly, it’s Bulletstorm; and you’re getting a back stage pass.

[Over the next few weeks the staff here at Gamer Limit will be sharing their personal favorite game of the past year with the community in build up to Gamer Limit’s Game of the Year Awards for 2010.]

After waiting for twelve long years gamers finally got what they’ve been begging for: StarCraft 2. I mean, is it really any surprise that SC2 is my pick for Game of the Year? Let’s run the numbers: it’s a PC exclusive that has a rapidly growing competitive scene complete with celebrity professionals (Idra, Huk, TLO, etc.), its own culture, icons, inside jokes (Day9, the Graken), and most importantly, a fantastic community that’s dedicated to evolving the game. When you really think about it, SC2 is a complete entertainment package for gamers of all levels of commitment.

That said, StarCraft 2 is not a perfect game. The writing in the single-player portion wasn’t exactly what I would call great, and the story really doesn’t reflect twelve years of work. However, the actual gameplay easily makes up for these faults. With multiple, persistent tech paths, as well as secret levels and branching story lines, there is more than enough content to warrant multiple playthroughs. Read more… »

About a month prior to the release of Dragon Quest IX, I had never played a DS game aside from a minute here and there on other people’s systems. I didn’t own a DS and didn’t really have any intention to buy one, especially since the 3DS had been announced already.

Then, through a fortunate series of events, I ended up with both a DS Lite and a copy of Dragon Quest IX. Just a few months later, I experienced something I never thought I’d experience again: I watched as the playtime counter passed the 200-hour mark.

All because of a little Japanese RPG on a portable system. Yeah, it surprised me too.

Until now, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has been cruelly starved of worthwhile DLC for too long. The optimistically priced online co-op Onslaught was completely lacklustre and the recurring influx of “new” VIP map packs was becoming a running joke.

Coincidentally timed with the release of a game that bears the initials of a certain breed of fish, DICE finally served up a tastier DLC dish comprising of four free maps, which did well to accentuate the aforementioned fish’s astronomically priced map packs. This, however, was only the start of DICE’s extensive DLC plans.

Announced in the most fleeting of teaser trailers during this year’s E3, Bad Company 2: Vietnam is DICE’s latest and most substantial DLC offering to date, stealthily creeping into the market after months of uncertainty surrounding the release date. But with such stiff competition in the FPS pond, is there any room left for Vietnam to engage?

Now, it can’t be shiny if it hasn’t been launched yet. With that context, this article’s title is a misnomer. There are several reasons why, however, when amazon.com’s Appstore is launched, it will make Apple’s squint — if not from the shine, then from the sheer affront of invading its personal space to convert iPhone owners into Android enthusiasts. More after the jump.

I played a lot of great games in 2010. I also played a lot of not-so great games in 2010. However, there’s one game that really resonated with me, even though I played it at the beginning of January. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the brand new IP and my GOTY pick: Darksiders.
