Quite a claim, isn’t it?  Microsoft chief financial officer Peter Klein made a statement during a conference call that the company’s own Kinect is the “fastest selling consumer electronic in history”.  That would make Kinect a faster seller than every other game console of this generation.

Klein also said during the call that that Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices division has grown 55% in the past year. The division, which generated $3.7 billion in revenue in Q4 of 2010, encompasses Xbox 360 and PC gaming, the Zune, and the recently released Windows Phone 7.  Growth has been attributed to the sale of 6.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the holiday season, an increase of 21% from last year, as well as the sale of 8 million Kinect sensors in the first 60 days of launch.

What do you think, readers?

Demo Impressions: Catherine
By: | January 28th, 2011

[Need to know how to make a Japanese PSN account? Click here]

As of yesterday, the Catherine demo has hit the Xbox Live and PSN Japanese marketplaces. What’s Catherine? It’s the newest creation by the Atlus Persona Team, and the first Atlus Team title to officially partake in the realm of HD. The game stars Vincent, a man who starts having nightmares the night he meets the girl of his dreams: Catherine. Regular ol’ nightmares would be fine, except for the fact that if Vincent dies in his nightmares, he dies in real life.

If you haven’t already created a Japanese account – do it! It’s a pretty simple affair, it’s free, and it doesn’t take much time. For those of you who can’t make one, feel free to hit the jump and see what Catherine is all about. Read more… »

Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2, the two most frequent contenders for Game of the Year 2010 awards across the gaming press, are fantastic titles and deserve the accolades…but I’ve put them down. Mass Effect 2′s ending was so anticlimactic that I don’t really feel inspired to go back unless there’s new DLC to pay through, and Undead Nightmare is giving me something to do with Red Dead Redemption but still isn’t compelling enough to keep the game in the drive of my Xbox 360.

For all its graphical bugs and quests that refuse to remove themselves from my active quest list even though I’ve completed them and other eccentricities, Fallout: New Vegas continues to hold my rapt attention after clocking 89 hours on my first character. I have to wrench myself away from the Mojave Wasteland to play titles for reviews, and it’s been weeks since I regularly played games online with my cadre of teammates. Looking back on it, I wish I’d given New Vegas one point over Red Dead when I voted in Kill Screen’s High Scores list for the best games of 2010. Read more… »

In the short time since they popped onto the scene Platinum Games have delivered a series of unique games, across a wide array of genres, imbuing each with such style that I don’t think we can rule out the fact that they might just be wizards.

Teaming up with SEGA (as they have done for each of their four previous titles; MadWorld, Infinite Space, Bayonetta and Vanquish), autumn 2011 will see the Japanese developers step into the world of online as they release Anarchy Reigns, a third-person multiplayer brawler incorporating a diverse range of multiplayer modes to provide players with different challenges.

It’s the announcement you’ve all been anticipating in another of Sony’s now infamous worst kept secrets: the belated unveiling of  the PSP’s proper successor.

Announced during Sony’s top secret “PlayStation Meeting 2011″ in Japan this morning, Sony’s next endeavour into the portable platform has been codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable), implying that they could be ditching the faltering PSP brand altogether.

Hit the jump for the all important features list!

Depicted above is the splash page to the updated website promoting Hybrid, 5th Cell’s latest title. It gives you the choice between siding with the Paladin or the Variants. Depending on your choice, you will click through to either a depraved, boarded up room or a stylishly sleek, high tech chamber, both replete with several goodies. Among the goodies are journals revealing a bit of the story for either side, brand new screens and the trailer.

“God didn’t create hell, the Variants did,” says the voice somewhat gaudily in the trailer. Yes, the teaser may sample a bit of the melodramatic, and also those new journal entries, but the game itself is guaranteed to be bold for several reasons.

The first ever DLC pack for the charming puzzle-race hit Raskulls is out today on the Xbox Live Arcade, for a measly 160 Microsoft Points. Don’t be fooled by the official XBLA description: the pack does come with a brand new cup in addition to the advertised four extra characters, which feature four new multiplayer levels.

I just tried them out a little while ago, and I’m excited to say they include some pretty neat mechanics from the Mega Quest, and are sure to please fans. This pack couldn’t have come sooner for some, as one of the chief complaints of Raskulls, from part of the community, was that it didn’t feature enough levels – well, here are four more for your perusal! Hopefully Halfbrick will have even more in store for us in the coming months, and everyone who has been holding out for more content can jump on board with this surprisingly fun game.

Today indie publisher Paradox announced that it’s new co-op Norse-based fantasy action game Magicka has sold over 30,000 copies in it’s first 24 hours of being released. Pretty impressive considering the developer, Arrowhead Studios, is just an eight person operation. What’s even more impressive is that because of those 24 hours, Magicka is now topping the charts on Valve’s Steam service. Read more… »

2010 was a pretty good year for video games. There were some okay games released. Red Dead Redemption might have won at the VGA’s and Mass Effect 2 might have been Gamer Limit’s GOTY choice, but I know there are games coming out next year that will blow them away. I say that 2011 will be even better than 2010! Hit the jump for my most wanted games of 2011.

Gamer Limit Review: Breach
By: | January 26th, 2011

In a way, I hate reviewing budget downloadable first-person shooters. More often than not, they’re simply bad, with poor graphics and lack of polish that can, in a way, be expected of games with a lower budget. Even the good ones often come along with a sense of disappointment because they can’t match up to a full-priced juggernaut of a franchise. In the first-person shooter genre, there are many such juggernauts; it’s easy to feel that the deck is stacked against games like this.

Breach, the downloadable title from Atomic Studios (makers of the controversial Six Days in Fallujah) won’t steal away flocks of players from Call of Duty, nor will it impress the average player who browses downloadable titles once a month. The greatest success of Breach is that it does destruction and cover far better than games like Bad Company 2 or Black Ops, which helps to make it a completely worthy addition to your digital library even with its lack of polish.
