Before you get your hopes up: no, this is not the long awaited console port of the indie classic, Spelunky. Spelunker HD is a brand new remake of the Brøderbund Atari/NES classic.

In fact, as it was released in 1983, Spelunker was one of the first “cave exploration” titles, and helped pave the way for many modern cave crawling classics. But does the PSN HD remake live up to the original’s name? Read on to find out. Read more… »

In the past, I’ve been pretty critical of Microsoft and their supposed support of the PC platform. That being said, I have to give credit where credit is due. Since releasing their new Games for Windows Marketplace application, Microsoft has been offering some pretty damn good deals on PC games. It’s hard to argue against a $0.99 game deal everyday.

Today’s $0.99 game is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, one of my personal favorites, which is why I felt obligated to let everyone know about this stellar deal. In order to jump on this deal all you need to do is head over to the Games for Windows Marketplace website, download the client, and make your purchase. Read more… »

It’s been widely known that Gran Turismo 5 features the track of dreams; BBC’s Top Gear test track, famously renowned for testing the driving diligence of celebrities and, of course, the Stig.

With this in mind, I decided to put its authenticity to the test by compiling a recorded lap in a Ferrari 458 Italia coupled with Jeremy Clarkson’s commentary from the Stig’s televised lap in the same car. The result is what you see in the video above.

While I think you will agree that with a spot of editing it is indeed possible to create a convincing Top Gear imitation,  it’s a shame the game doesn’t include the authentic camera angles from the show, not to mention his Stigness as a playable driver. Nonetheless, it’s still tremendous fun to drive around and offers great incentive to try and compete with Top Gear’s Power Lap board.

Gamer Limit’s review of Gran Turismo 5 will be up this week.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is not Assassin’s Creed 3, but it would be folly to dismiss it as a cash-in of Assassin’s Creed II.  Ezio Auditore da Firenze’s story is chronicled further in this fantastic opus as the conspiracy in the series’ modern era deepens.  Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is a game that introduces new elements, expands on the ones that already worked, and adds multiplayer to an already excellent single player.  The result is easily one of the top games of 2010.

The story picks up directly after Assassin’s Creed II as the war between Assassins and Templars rages on in both the present and the past.  In the real world of 2012 modern day Assassins Desmond, Lucy, Shaun and Rebecca elude the ever-persistent Templars of Abstergo Industries by hiding in the lone refuge of Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni, now a historic ruin.

Early Friday morning, GameTrailers revealed the world premier trailer of Telltale Games’ long awaited episodic adventure, Back To The Future The Game. Back in June, Telltale released a teaser announcing the project along with a Jurrasic Park title. For six months, fans have been on pins and needles — and for anyone (including myself) following the hype, this particular trailer was supposed to be epic. Telltale themselves said, “it looks fantastic!”

All subjectivity aside, there can be an argument as to why the trailer fails or succeeds in delivering 1.21 jiggawatts of excitement. It lends itself perfectly to this next installment on what it takes to hype up a game right, or wrong. A bit of fair warning, this article bears potentially gruesome videos after the jump.  We’ll let you decide why they’re both gruesome.

In the primitive yesteryear of 2009, humble developer FreeStyleGames went beyond downloadable content for Guitar Hero and set to work on their brainchild: DJ Hero was born.  It was a ton of fun to play between the soundtrack, innovative peripheral, and the same effective imagining of a DJ star that Guitar Hero does with wannabe rock legends.  The big drawbacks were the lack of multiplayer appeal that made Guitar Hero shine as well as a hefty price tag.

These problems unfortunately lent themselves to weaken sales figures, but that didn’t deter Activision.  Now DJ Hero 2 has hit shelves exactly a year later and refines, tweaks, and hones the formula for another memorable, thoroughly entertaining, and notably more social experience.

Remember when Need for Speed was about racing down the open road in an open-top exotic whilst evading the police rather than who has the most tasteless body kit? Of course you don’t, because the last half a decade or so has seen the once unbeatable racing franchise begin to rust as each iteration became progressively low in quality.

Thankfully, last year saw a turning point with Need for Speed Shift, a thoroughbred track racer that started the restoration process. I rather liked it, too, yet I was still longing for that classic, awe-inspiring Need for Speed experience I grew up with: I even went as far as pleading for a new Hot Pursuit game at the end of my Shift review last year.

Mercifully it seems that someone out there was listening, as here I am, over a year later, playing the rebranded Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (the first game in the series to bear the Hot Pursuit subtitle in eight years), with development duties this time handed to the talented creators of Burnout, Criterion Games. The bonkers Burnout series remains a firm favourite of mine as well, so the prospect of Need for Speed merging with Burnout was positively salivating to say the least. After all, if there’s one developer that’s up for the task of rebooting Need for Speed, it’s surely Criterion: the chase is on.

Way back in August my buddy Kevin Miller published his review of the video game streaming service OnLive. While he was impressed with the technology, one of Kevin’s biggest complaints was the pricing structure.

Apparently OnLive was listening because today they announced that starting January 15, there will be a new subscription option which features a flat $9.99 rate per month. Dubbed the ‘OnLive PlayPack’ subscription, this option will feature a “growing library” of “recent, classic and indie titles.” You probably should note that there is a limited selection of titles that fall under the ‘OnLive PlayPack’ subscription. To see what they are, hit the jump. Read more… »

When Facebook is viewed as a console, it seems all the glamor and flash surrounding it gets violently sucked into a bottomless pit and all the power it boasts as a gaming giant turns out to be a charade. Hardcore console and PC gamers may view this statement and say, “good riddance. Enough said. Let’s move on with our day.”

We would be remiss, however, not to ground the ‘Facebook as a console’ concept in tangible facts. Also, what is a good news article without a comment from EA? So, let’s get into the nitty gritty and see how Facebook is setting itself up for a serious beating in the gaming world.

You must have played Flight Control on your iDevice right?  Sure you have, it just might not have been the original Flight Control by Firemint.  Even if you’re devoid of an Apple product you will have most likely played something similar on a score of flash based games sites.

The thing that made Firemint’s version of this formula compelling was the clean presentation and well balanced gameplay approach.  Has this made the transition to the PS3?  More importantly, does the Move controller bork it all up? Hit the jump to find out! Read more… »

It’s that time of year again when most gamers are spending their hard-earned cash on Christmas presents rather than full-priced titles. But while you may not be able to splurge on all the latest AAA releases this month, at least you can rest easy in the knowledge that there are plenty of Mini and indie games out there to while away the time.

Mediatonic has already staked its claim on the market with the surprisingly enjoyable Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, and they are up to their old tricks again with the new PSN Mini release, Who’s That Flying?!
