The time has finally come! Gamer Limit is ringing in the new year with of the best games 2010 had to offer. The Gamer Limit staff has nominated and selected the top games of 2010. Plenty of great games joined the libraries of the Wii and DS systems this year.
The nominees for Gamer Limit’s Nintendo Games of the Year include: Infinite Space, Dragon Quest IX, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: The Ultimate All Stars, and Epic Mickey. But, who won? You’ll need to hit the jump to find out.
Wii GOTY – Super Mario Galaxy 2
When Nintendo first announced Super Mario Galaxy 2, people were afraid it was going to be more like Super Mario Galaxy 1.5, While it’s true that they may not have reinvented the wheel when they made Galaxy 2, that was entirely fine by us. The original Super Mario Galaxy was amazing, one of the finest titles on the Wii and an all around fantastic platformer. Who wouldn’t want more of a good thing?
Not only did Galaxy 2 live up to the pedigree of the original, but surpassed it. When Chris Carter reviewed Galaxy 2 back in May, he not only gave it a 10, calling it one of the best games of this generation, but also said that it succeeded “in topping it’s predecessor in every way”. Our writers and editors agree, and that’s why its our Wii Game of the Year 2010.
DS GOTY – Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
As a series, Dragon Quest is something of an oddity. Since 1986 virtually everything about the series has remained the same. The reason Square Enix can get away with this is because Dragon Quest defined the turn-based RPG genre. It hasn’t changed because it doesn’t need to. It’s just that good.
While it doesn’t stray too far from its roots Dragon Quest IX changes formula that up a bit. With this entry, the series that is the embodiment of the JRPG has begun to Westernize. The inclusion of character customization, four-player co-op, and vocational side-quests are definitely welcomed attributes to this venerable series. Dragon Quest IX is absolutely fantastic and is our DS Game of the Year 2010.
