Today D3Publisher announced that a sequel to the hilariously addictive Xbox 360 budget title Earth Defense Force 2017 will be hitting stores Spring 2011. Dubbed Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, the third-person shooter will be arriving on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
According to the press release, “Players take on the role of the world’s elite soldiers, who will engage in nonstop bug filled arcade action with over 150 weapons and four upgradeable armor sets.” The game will also feature three player online co-op, as well as a “six-player Survival mode that pits a human squad against a nonstop onslaught of the largest enemies.”
One important thing to note is that Insect Armageddon is being developed by Vicious Cycle Software (the guys behind the Matt Hazard series), not the Japanese developer SANDLOT who did the original.
For those of you who missed out on the first game, let me fill you in. Essentially, the whole concept of the game was that you play a soldier fighting off massive bugs and aliens with a variety of weapons. The best way to visualize what the game is all about is to is to imagine being one of the Japanese soldiers you see in those old Godzilla movies. It was a pretty generic shooter, but after a few beers and with a few buddies it turns into a whole lot of fun. Needless to say I’ll be keeping this one on my radar.
What about you guys? Did you play the original? If so, what did you think? What about this sequel, are you excited for it? Let us know what you think with a comment below.
