Gamer Limit Banner

With the advent of a little show called GamesCom happening in Cologne this week prepare yourself for an onslaught of media updates for already announced titles.  Early out of the gate is this news from EA on the upcoming third installment in to Harmonix’s rhythm game franchise. Read more… »

Load up your Wii this week and take control of a “space jet” on a faraway planet in Calaris’ Space Trek. Outsmart the aliens to save the survivors whilst enjoying the game’s special brand of “humorous dialogue”. (700 Wii Points)

In A Monsteca Corral: Monsters vs. Robots, the planet of Monsteca has become overrun by an army of robots. It’s up to you to gather the herd and defeat the invaders. This strategy game offers 20 levels and is probably the closest thing to Pikmin 3 we will be getting for a while. For 500 Wii points it doesn’t look half bad.

Hit the jump for the rest of this week’s update and Space Trek‘s hilariously bad trailer.

If you live in or around New York City, you’ll definitely want to mark your calendar for October 20th, as the city will get to experience a one-of-a-kind event for those of us who love music and video games. CMJ Play, an event in the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival, will give attendees a deep look into the new landscape of the music business, which involves video games as much as (if not more than) it does MP3 players and digital downloads.

If you’re not a current New Yorker or have no idea what CMJ is, you’ll want to check out the full news post. This event sounds pretty damn amazing.

iPhone Graduation Day
By: | August 16th, 2010

Prior to the purchase of my first iPhone, I did not take it seriously as a gaming platform at all. In fact, I actually recoiled at the idea conceptually. I’ve also never been one to subscribe to the hardcore gamer tendency of dismissing social games and so-called “casual games.” On the other hand, I couldn’t look at the iPhone and consider it in the same category as my Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, or PC. Those are all “platforms.” The iPhone, however, was “a phone with games you can play on it.”

My wife won her iPhone two years ago in a raffle, and fell in love. She’s a blogger and social media junkie, which is what she mostly used the phone for. When I discovered the existence of Mass Effect Galaxy, being a junkie of the franchise, I ordered the game up on her phone and gave it a whirl.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that THQ was working on a downloadable XBLA and PSN game set in the Red Faction universe. Today, during a GDC panel, THQ Digital Warrington creative director Don Whiteford revealed this downloadable title when he announced that his studio’s first game will be Red Faction: Battlegrounds.

Said to be a “topdown car, mech and rover combat title,” Battlegrounds will feature local multiplayer, with up to “four players on the same screen.” As with all good tie-in games, Battlegrounds will allow gamers to unlock “unique elements” for the next upcoming installment in the Red Faction series; Red Faction: Armageddon. If you didn’t already know, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a fantastic movie. So, I have decided to make sure you knew that before I get into the week that was. Go see it. Now!

Anyhow, outside of the movie theater, the week has been fun. But, we prepare for another week of features, editorials, reviews, and, most importantly, community blogs! Yes, they are back on the front page. Rejoice with me as I recap the week that was.

For most, the summer lull is still in full effect. Outside of sports titles and downloadable games, really not too much going on in the world of video game releases. Don’t worry though, big release after big release is quickly approaching.

So are you taking advantage of this lull to enjoy activities other than video games? Are you tackling your backlog? Or maybe you’re doing the cool thing and playing sports games. Either way, we want to hear about it. Read more… »

Still playing LittleBigPlanet? It isn’t cute enough for you yet?  No worries: Marvel have shown off their latest edition of content for the PS3 platformer.

The Fourth Marvel Super Heroes Pack hits on August 17 and provides you with Storm, The Hulk, Punisher, Magneto, and the Green Goblin. Two of those aren’t heroes, but who’s counting?

Check out Kotaku for the full gallery.

When I asked Mark Lamia of Treyarch at E3 whether we’d be seeing zombies in the studio’s highly-anticipated next chapter in the Call of Duty series, he gave me the same answer that Activision and Treyarch have given everyone: “No comment.”

I distinctly remember Mark having a smirk on his face when he said it, however. It’s being reported that a Best Buy listing for the Hardened Edition of Black Ops read that it will feature “Four Zombie Maps Pack made famous from COD: World at War.” This information has since been pulled from the Best Buy site.

Minimalist designs are some of the most creative ways to show off your gaming pride. The absolute best part of the concept of minimalism is the fact that for most designs, you don’t have to be afraid of being branded a “geek” by the public at large (because they won’t recognize what the design is): and on the flip side, hardcore gamers are more likely to approach you and comment on how cool you are.

Check out MySoti.com to see what I mean – there are a lot more minimalist video game artists out there of course, but this is one of the better designers I’ve seen so far. Read more… »

id iPhone gaming
By: | August 13th, 2010

John Carmack of id Software made an announcement today at QuakeCon 2010 which sounded completely and engrossingly insane. I like insane when it comes to gaming. It usually makes me happy.

First, the good news about id iPhone gaming in the here and now: sales. Lots of ‘em, all running until the end of QuakeCon on Sunday, August 15th.

We are roughly 3 hours away until our live streaming of Gamer Limit Game Night. Tonight, we play some Alien Swarm for the PC. If you haven’t already, go and download it from Steam for free! Don’t worry, a lot of us will be learning how to play for the first time too.

Be sure to send a message or friend invite to Jorrel56 on Steam as well as Skype. We will be meeting up on Skype first and then working out all of the details on how to join in on the fun. Expect for those details to be updated in this post as well. If you aren’t able to join us in-game tonight, be sure to watch the stream above and hit the the jump for the chat. Alternatively, you can watch the live stream here. Enjoy!

Update: Once again, Gamer Limit Game Night was an absolute blast. Took us a bit to get the hang of Alien Swarm, but by the end of the night the campaign was complete. Enjoy the stream above, but blame Comcast for the severe loss in frame rate about an hour in.
