Last month’s North American release of Deathsmiles on the Xbox 360 has provided a sign that shmup fans may no longer have to deal with expensive Japanese imports to experience Cave shooters. Following the recent iPhone release of Espgaluda 2, Cave has announced that it is planning a full English localization and worldwide release of Guwange on Xbox Live Arcade.

Cave has recently revealed a trailer for their next vertical bullet hell shmup, Akai Katana (or Red Katana in English). Unfortunately, the trailer does not show any gameplay footage, but does show off some nice character art and narrative.

Regardless, details on the upcoming Cave shooter are coming from Arcade operator G-Front. According to them Akai Katana is set in a world complete with mechs, and 1950s stylized military machinery. The player controls a ship with two pilots, each of whom come with a unique attack.

Prior to Akai Katana’s arcade release, Cave is planning a location test this upcoming weekend. So if you happen to be in Tokyo, head out to Akihabara Hey between July 23rd and the 26th if you want to get a sneak peak at the next shmup from Cave.

I loved Macross, love Yoko Konno and Shinichiro Watanabe, but I really cduoln’t stand Macross Plus. Didn’t like a single character and I can hardly remember the plot. The animation was pretty, but nothing about the action itself stood out to me and it lacked the campy humor that made me like the original Macross. Probably didn’t help watching the whole OVA in one sitting, I guess.
