Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you know that everyone is raving about Alien Swarm; the free, 4 player, top-down, co-op shooter released by Valve on its Steam service.
Well, word got out that there are a few simple console commands that allow you to get down and dirty with the aliens by playing in first-person. Don’t believe me? See for your self.
In order to switch up the view, first activate the developer’s console (options-> keyboard-> advanced-> enable console). Once you got that set up, make a game. Once you are in-game hit ` (left of 1) and enter the lines:
- asw_hide_marine 1
- asw_controls 0
As you can see from the video above, it’s not a perfect transition, however, it does make for a unique play though in what is normally a relativity short game.
If this sort of in-game modding tickles your fancy, you should check out this post on the Steam forums. The user Shrimpsess was good enough to post a ton of useful console commands that let you tailor the game how you want it.
On a side note, how have you guys been enjoying Alien Swarm? Last night was the first time I really got to play the game with my hardcore L4D2 crew, and it was a blast. Nothing beat shouting quotes from Aliens while gunning down hordes of baddies. Now if only they had Bill Paxton doing the voice acting… (NSFW: language)
