Today long time strategy guide producer Prima has launched a new method of distribution that revolves around Valve’s Steam service.

Gamers can now purchase game guides off of the Steam store and access them in-game via the Steam overlay. A major advantages of the digital guide format includes video walkthroughs, which are obviously not possible in print.

In celebration of this new development, Prima is offering 50% off of all Steam guides, which are regularly priced at $19.99. So far there are guides for:

  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • Just Cause 2
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening
  • Splinter Cell: Conviction

Personally, I think this is kind of a dumb idea. The Steam overlay has a web browser incorporated into it, which means you could just bring up GameFaqs.com rather than spending $20. But then again, maybe I’m just a cheapskate.

What do you guys think? Will you be giving these new guides a try, or are you too cheap like me?

  1. Saw this yesterday and wasn’t certain what the point was. You mentioned GameFAQs, and to be perfectly honest I’d rather read off a print copy. You can more easily bookmark and reference an actual book.

  2. Well… since its something you can use in the overlay, presumably without having to search for it or anything, it might be something I’d consider if I was having problems before FAQs were really being written. But I dunno… thats a pretty price to ask for something like this.

  3. GAMEFAQS FOR THE WIN!!!

I have found it.c:\programdata is correct and that was also what was wretitn first on this message board (i did not notice that, sorry). Most other message boards I have read about this, tells the files are located in the folder userdata folder where the program is installed but this is not correct for vista. And I have copied the files to Windows 7 so I am positive it also uses the savefiles in the c:\programfiles as wretitn in this message board. The programdata folder is hidden and the savefiles has the levelno in the filename, that is why I couldnt find them earlier.
