Today Nintendo revealed a new title following in the foot steps of Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit. Dubbed Wii Party, the new casual game promises to be “a marquee party game.”

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, “We are developing it with the intent that every Wii player will be able to find a game that can be enjoyed.” Iwata went on to add, “the developers are spending significant time for this title so that they can include elements that are must-haves in a party game as well as making sure that adequate volume of game play are available.”

Iwata noted that, “[a] party title has great potential. Nintendo has not launched a marquee party game since Mario Party 8 [released in 2007].” He continued “[The] Wii is usually being played by several people at once and the global sales of Mario Party have reached 7.6 million units.”

According to Iwata, Wii Party is slated to arrive within this current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2011.

As someone who owns a dust covered Wii, I’m looking forward to this title. A good party game is just the thing to get me to power up my underused console.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you own a Wii but never play it? Am I the only one? Do you think Wii Party has the potential to get you waggling again?

  1. I imagine this is going to result in screams of outrage across most of the internet.

But if this functions as an adequate replacement for the traditional board game in today’s media-centered world, I can see it doing well. Nintendo HAS shown that it’s capable of turning a bizarre and likely-to-fail idea (as many would call the digital party game) into a well-designed and well-performing product, so I don’t see this as being any different.

  2. My wii has been sitting in a shoe box for about six months now. Still waiting for “Other M”

  3. I’m not sure if I’m interested in another Wii party game. Wasn’t Mario Party enough? Still, can’t hurt to try it.

  4. The ‘Wii’ series has been pretty hit or miss, so I’m going to take this with a pinch of salt, especially after the travesty that was Wii Music. Wii Play was pretty atrocious too…

But still, I have faith in Nintendo. Now, where’s my new Pilotwings game??

  5. So instead of making a decent and new Mario Party game or releasing the Mario Party series on Virtual Console they’re making another half-assed game for the Wii series?

I’m just making assumptions. This could be what Mario Party 8 should of been but I think it’ll be another tacky game.

my wii is dust covered, i tried to love it, i really did, but the only reason i have it still is to go back and play twilight princess and any other new zelda games

i haven’t even bothered to connect it to the net yet

might grab the metroid games sometime and try them out though

  7. To everyone mentioning dusty Wii’s… try Monster Hunter Tri. It has made my PS3 and 360 very lonely.
