Today publisher Square Enix announced that the next iteration of the Kingdom Hearts series (and the first on PSP) will arrive in North America on Sept. 7. Our friends in Europe will have to wait until the Sept. 10 to get their hands on it.

Subtitled Birth by Sleep, the action-RPG will serve as a prequel telling the story of how Terra, Ventus, and Aqua face “a crisis affecting worlds far beyond their own.” Apparently the narrative will revolve around Keyblade Master Xehanort and how has gone missing. KH:BbS will feature worlds from Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White.

In addition to the game being released on Sept. 7, Sony has announced that it will release a “KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep PSP Entertainment Pack” on the same day. The pack will include “Mystic Silver” PSP-3000, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep on UMD, a movie (currently unannounced), and 4GB Memory Sick PRO Duo. Those of you who are interested in the pack can pick them up at your local GameStop.

As someone who has never played the Kingdom Hearts series, I’m excited for this. Throughout high school I had friends recommending these games to me, but at the time I didn’t have a PS2. Hopefully this prequel will serve as a good entryway into the Kingdom Hearts world.

Are you guys excited for this? Do you think that a JRPG featuring Disney characters and worlds will entertain me, a 23 year-old college student? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

  1. I didn’t really enjoy the first Kingdom Hearts game. It wasn’t because I found the Disney cameos made the game too corny or kiddy, or anything like that. I just thought the gameplay and plot were substandard. And, honestly, if you don’t like the gameplay or the story, what’s left, really?
