Super Meat Boy is going to be one of the best downloadable titles this year with over 150 levels and insane challenges to boot. However, it won’t be ready any time soon. If you’ve been looking to scratch your itch with another difficult platformer, you should try Orton and the Princess instead!

Orton is a Flixel-based platformer with eighteen levels to knock your head against, though the game’s humor is sure to dreg a few smiles from between curses. The music track is pretty awesome as well and while it is definitely no Super Meat Boy, you should experience it just to see the ending.

The thing that really bothers me about games like this and Meat Boy, is that they’re not actually hard because of the platforming elements. What makes them hard is that the controls are absolutely zany and hard to work with.

Any time I ever got stuck in Meat Boy (and the few times I got stuck in Orton), it wasn’t cos I couldn’t figure out what to do, or even that I couldn’t get the timing right. It was just that I couldn’t stop my character from spazzing out. That’s just no fun to me, I guess. Tight controls are extremely important to me in a platformer.

    • Yep, I can definitely see that. The success of Super Meat Boy will really depend on how well the controls are handled. Since it is coming out on PC, XBLA, and Wii, your controller of choice could really mean the difference in how well you play the game.

Gotta admit the humor is grand, though.

    • Haha yeah, the game was pretty funny.

  2. I had to configure my 360 controller for the game in order to play it. Like Jamie said, the controls were very frustrating at times. Very cute though, and the music makes your inevitable deaths far less frustrating.

I had zero problem with the controls for this or Meat Boy using a USB Playstation controller connector, and Joy2Key. I highly recommend it.
