In what seems to be a worrying new trend with developers, this week has seen German 3D engine supremos Crytek talk a whole lot of smack about a whole lot of stuff.  Over the course of the last week, they have managed to take a pop at Infinity Ward and Modern Warfare 2 , Uncharted 2, Halo and now demos.  Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan stated that Modern Warfare 2 was an “immense disappointment” and Halo’s story was apparently “bullsh*t” as well.

The Uncharted 2 digs have come from Studio Head Cevat Yerli stating that the title did “nothing to advance games”.  His latest bold statement seems to be that demos are “prohibitively expensive” and “a luxury”.  This is what he had to say to Develop earlier today:

You’ve seen the film, but now it’s time to reveal the behind the scenes outtakes you didn’t see.

This final bonus supplement to Collateral Collision gives you an insight into the arduous production process of my ambitious car chase machinima, featuring a series of vehicular mishaps for your viewing pleasure. Hideo Kojima is a busy developer lately.  In addition to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the PlayStation Portable, the architect of Metal Gear Solid is involved in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  Some recent Twitter updates picked up by Andria Sang and Gamespot indicate that Kojima has another project in the planning phase.

While details are scarce, Kojima says that “The project plan still hasn’t reached a detailed level, but everything is advancing simultaneously in my head. Title, game design, story, characters, setting research, the mech that appear, casting, graphic direction, sound, beginning and ending, the major story sequences. It comes together naturally in my head.”

Crossovers in the world of gaming seems fairly common now, what with Sackboy having tons of costumes of popular video game characters and Commander Video and Tim scheduled to make an appearance in Super Meat Boy later this summer. So it makes sense that the guys of  Sam & Max and Team Fortress 2 would team up to.. wait, what?

That’s right, folks. From now until April 23rd, if you pre-order Sam & Max’s latest adventure, The Devil’s Playhouse, you’ll get three items to spruce up your gameplay in Team Fortress 2. The first of these is a purely cosmetic severed Max head hat, but the latter two are both both functional weapons you will be able to use in the game.

Today sure is turning into a day for reliving past classics, what with the news of a new X-Com title in the works and now this.  Swedish developer Starbreeze, previously responsible for the Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness titles, were tasked back in 2008 to make two new titles for uber-publisher EA.

One was the recently canned re-boot of the Jason Bourne franchise, and the other was a mystery.  The fabled title was referred to in hushed tones as “Project Redline”.  Over time this has long been rumoured to be the very much awaited sequel to Bullfrog’s masterful Syndicate and Syndicate Wars.

Today developer 2K Marin (of BioShock 2 fame) announced that it is currently working on a first-person shooter set in the X-COM universe.

For those of you who don’t know about X-COM, it was a turn-based tactical strategy game like Fallout: Tactics. The premise of X-COM is that you are in charge of the worlds UFO defense. Essentially you create a squad of soldiers, find where UFOs have landed on the Earth and then kill all the aliens you find. Read more… »

It’s been more then 8 years since the original Xbox Live meandered into our lives and changed online console multiplayer as we know it. Sadly, Microsoft have deemed it too costly and irrelevant to co-exist with it’s modern successor; so as of Midnight (Pacific Time) tonight, XBL 1.0 will be no more.

I think we all have our own memories that shall be cherished in glorious geek history; my own mostly consisted of Halo and MechAssault battles, along with futile efforts at configuring my router to perform properly. Meeting strange and, frankly, batshit crazy people on Crimson Skies who knew far too much about WW2 era fighter planes.

Rest in Peace, my friend, for we shall always have the Warthog.

This week our live show was interrupted by a pair of lonely men looking to abate their crippling loneliness by exposing themselves to us via Tinychat. Though Chase initially insisted we keep them aboard to “see where this is going”, we eventually had to remove them in the interests of our listeners.

Worry not, however, as Chase, Paul, Shawn, Dylan and myself were able to work past these unexpected visitors and provide you with yet another excellent edition of the Limitcast.

On the docket this week – the Starcraft 2: Collectors Edition, Bullet Storm, and further struggles between the folks at Activision and Infinity Ward.

Also, hit the jump for details on our ongoing Geometry Wars 2 contest.
