For anyone who may not have heard, EA’s Chief Operating Officer, Nick Earl, recently revealed plans to introduce a new premium DLC system, in which EA will charge a fee for an extended game demo, comparable in size and content to Battlefield 1943.

This could potentially be an innovating strategy for EA, providing gamers with early content of anticipated games, while giving EA valuable gamer reaction to said games. Unfortunately, it looks like there’s already a lot of potential downside to this system, and its success will depend greatly on how EA chooses to implement it. Read more… »

I can’t really say I’ve been counting the days until Ubisoft’s new strategy title hits store shelves, so I’m not exactly devastated to hear it has been pushed back until September 2010 from the original June date.

What does surprise me is the honest reason that Ubisoft has given.  Over the past month or so Ubisoft have held open beta tests of the product, which has apparently culminated in them being overwhelmed with feedback.  Announced on the game’s Facebook page earlier today was the reasoning behind the change of date.

If you are able to tear yourself away from God of War 3 and back into the depths of hell, April 29th is the day to do it. EA recently provided the latest detailed walkthrough for Dante’s Inferno‘s newest DLC: Trials of St. Lucia. As was shown in our review, this is sure to be an interesting DLC for a genre that has been without user creation and co-op for the most part.

As can be seen in the video, users are the core of this DLC experience. Trials of St. Lucia will provide players with the ability to contribute user generated content in the form of trials. It is then up to the players to attempt to tackle these trials with or without a friend and rate what they play to allow others easier access to the best content. Read more… »

After the mass firing of Infinity Ward employees, Jason West and Vince Zampella have been backed by EA to create Respawn Entertainment – A catchy little title I do say.  As of today, Jason and Vince are sticking it to the man and hiring many of the ex-employees from Infinity Ward.

Former Infinity Ward lead designer Todd Alderman has become the first to announce his allegiance with Respawn.  But wait, there’s more!

Another year, another Madden. Following news of the newest cover athlete, an official trailer of Madden NFL 11 has been released. This year’s installment promises a simpler, quicker, and deeper experience.

Just as each year before, changes in Madden concern me. However, I stay optimistic and just remember that those behind the game love this franchise just as much as I do. Either way, you be the judge as what follows is surely interesting and intriguing to say the least.

Assassin's Creed 2

As most of you are probably aware, Ubisoft’s controversial new DRM system requires players to have a constant internet connection to Ubisoft’s servers. This has caused problems for legitimate players of their games, and pirate groups have been diligently working on a way to crack the system since launch.

Apparently, they were successful. A group of crackers known as SKIDROW have managed to completely remove the DRM protection and an Assassin’s Creed 2 torrent has recently been uploaded to file sharing sites. Read more… »

Today EA announced that New Orleans’ Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be featured on the cover of Madden NFL 11. This honor should be a bit more meaningful to Brees considering that it was the first time fans got to vote on which athlete would appear on the cover.

It should also come as no surprise that Brees won out over Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne considering the fact that Brees’s team won Super Bowl XLIV and he was named MVP of that game. Read more… »

Sam Fisher is everywhere I go. I see him in the dimly lit streets, behind an SUV, and hanging from a 10-foot air duct. He hides behind every window, and lurks in each darkened corner.

At 23-years-old, and having played video games almost every day for the better part of 18 years, I rarely come across a title that has such a profound impact upon me as Splinter Cell: Conviction. Have you ever played a game where, even when you are at school or work or college, you continue to play out scenarios in your mind’s eye, or fondly replay an unforgettable moment over and over in your head?

Conviction is one such game.

Whether you’re one of those eco-warriors recycling for the planet, or, like me, you simply wade through games quicker than you earn money, you’re probably pretty familiar with the second-hand section of your favored game store. Well, make the most of it, because if some of the greedier publishers get their way, buying used games in the near future could prove more awkward and expensive for you, and more profitable for them.

Inevitably, the balance of game sales tipped a little further in favor of used titles during the recession, with Gamestop generating a monumental $2 billion in revenue through sales of second-hand games in 2008 alone, equating to around a quarter of its total revenue for the year. Clearly the used game industry is rather lucrative, which is undoubtedly why developers and publishers are once again lashing back, protesting that second-hand gaming is damaging to the industry. Could this perhaps be due to the fact they don’t get a penny of used game profits?
