Despite the drama surrounding Infinity Ward lately, the Call of Duty series is alive and well.  Today in a press release Activision unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops, a new chapter in the long-running franchise.  Treyarch will be taking the reins for development of Black Ops after having previously developed Call of Duty: World at War. Not much has been detailed about gameplay, but reportedly Black Ops will take the player “behind enemy lines”.

“We can’t wait for our community to experience Call of Duty: Black Ops,” said Mark Lamia, Studio Head for Treyarch. “We have focused our entire studio on this game, with dedicated multiplayer, single-player and co-op teams creating the most intense, gripping and riveting experience possible for our fans on all fronts.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops is slated for a November 9 release date.  Further details will develop at the website.

  1. So is this the alleged Treyarch “Vietnam” game? Or are there two Treyarch games.

    • This seems to be the project that went under the name “Call of Duty 8″ for a while. This and Modern Warfare 3 are in the works.

    • I just read that Black Ops may have Vietnam, among other locations in it.

I just hope it has Zombies.

    • “I just hope it has Zombies.”

What does it say about the state of Call of Duty games when the feature people are most interested in is a zombie mode?

    • It says that Battlefield is just “shoot shoot shoot players”, and when I’m bored of it, I have to shoot some more players.

If I want to kick back with 3 of my friends, relax, and play some coop Nazi Zombies, I have the option, in addition to robust matchmaking gameplay. That’s a sweet deal.

  2. More of a comment on Treyarch CoD games than anything.

    • I thought World at War was a fine game. The actual level designs were much better than COD 4, and vehicles fit great into the 32v32 gameplay. I think it got too much flak because it had to follow Call of Duty 4, and it was in the tired World War 2 setting.

I didn’t mind that it was a “me too” design: it worked for me – especially since it had 3 full free map packs!
