Do I really need to say more than that? Not only does it look like it breaks up the entire pacing of the game, but I cringe every time the player attempts to jump with his minecart, and falls short due to some invisible wall.

Why SEGA felt the need to lift Loco Rocco, and put Sonic into yet another zany overly complicated contraption, I have no idea. Are you still going to pick this one up despite the above video?

Edit – That was not me in the video.

I think I will get this just because of how much I enjoyed. Old sonic games and GBA sonic games. one bad level isn’t enough too doom the whole thing.

    • The rumored price point for Episode 1 is $5 – that’s cheap enough for me to take a risk on it. My guess is if there’s footage of a pretty terrible level this early on, there will be at least one more.

    • avatar Kagebure

Its Possible But at the Five dollar Price mark I can hardly complain. I wonder what kind of new level ideas will the Other episodes bring. Weird this is sounding worse by the minute. Take sonic back too the good ol’ days But throw New and Possibly broken Gameplay mechanics into it.

    • avatar Adam M.

What risk? It’s $5 and it’s Sonic going back to it’s roots, somewhat to it’s roots. Just because there is one boring level it shouldn’t change your mind on the whole game. There is a ton more games with terrible level design.

    • @Adam M.
Because I have no faith in Sonic anymore, like most people. Sonic hasn’t been good for over ten years (Sonic Adventure in 1998, but even then some people would argue “friends” ruined it). “Roots” or not, this game could end up having a handful of these kinds of levels if SEGA demands it – Dimps isn’t infallible.

Of course I have no idea yet, and neither does anyone else – but this video isn’t calming my fears. There could be ten million worse games, but if Sonic 4 is bad, it won’t get my money.

    • avatar Kagebure

You only need Sonic Tails Knuckles and Eggman. and no voice acting what so ever. too have a good time with sonic.

  2. I like they’re making an attempt to try something more than just “he goes run run fast” levels. Sonic 2 had Sonic riding an aeroplane so it’s not like he’s never been out of his running element before. This doesn’t seem polished enough to be the full release, so why criticise minor bugs now, I’m sure Portal and Bioshock had gaping unfun elements before release, you just didn’t see them.

    • The clipping bug can obviously be fixed: it’s the entire mechanic that looks terrible, and aptly ripped from something else.

Sonic fans could argue all day about “vehicle versus non vehicle Sonic”, but I think it’s safe to say that with the right mechanic (Donkey Kong Country’s Mine Cart, or DKC2′s Rollercoaster), it could work. Just not like this.

  3. avatar wg

Sega has made plenty of mistakes but you’re just being a whiny bitch

What makes the mechanic terrible other than it was ripped from something else? It’s not like Sonic invented running

The pacing? Have you ever seen a player new to Sonic? It’s the same thing, bumping into walls and enemies.

Invisible walls? Those are obviously bugs.

You just come off as a whiner desperate to find things to get outraged over.

  4. avatar Yami

Honestly, I think this could work if it was just zoomed out a bunch and some of those ‘invisible walls’ were playtested out of it.

  5. avatar Khanstant

It looks like you just suck ass. This level looks fun (except for that it was played by some sort of scrub), reminds me of the special levels from past sonic games in some ways.

  6. avatar You're Just Wrong

I agree with Khanstant – this post should have been titled “Sonic 4 video apparently features the most incompetent player ever made”.

He’s not falling short due to some invisible wall. He’s falling short due to the fact that he is RUNNING INTO ACTUAL WALLS AND THEN TRYING TO JUMP WITH NO MOMENTUM. Notice how every time he’s moving before he jumps, he happily travels forward?

Or consider: “Oh look, spears! OH GOD I HIT ONE OH NO MY RINGS! I guess I’d better–OH GOD I HIT ANOTHER ONE OH NO MY RINGS! TIME TO USE MY TEMPORARY INVULNERABILITY TO GET THROUGH INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY CIRCUMVENTING THE OBSTACLE!”

I mean, come on. You can have legitimate beefs with this level, like that it’s dumb to have Sonic in a minecart, or that the control scheme sounds like it sucks. But to say that the level design is bad because the player in the video is completely incompetent is disingenuous and unfair to the Dimps level design team.

  7. avatar adoblivione

I only saw 2 places in that level where you could conceivably die, and even someone who was obviously having trouble with the controls only got hit once. To me, that makes the whole stage an exercise in pointlessness. What got accomplished there? We bounced around for nearly 6 minutes, getting more and more frustrated all the while.

Even if all the bugs were worked out of this level, and the controls became fluid and flawless, it still seems like a superfluous break from the regular play style. It might not ruin the game, but I think it’ll still detract from it.

  8. avatar MK

this level would have been popular due to the “wow factor” back in 1996. But now it looks just plain annoying.

  9. Jeez, this makes the casino levels I always hate look entertaining. I got sick just watching the video.

    • avatar Emin

Good to hear, well I’m on yutbuoe messing with those silly underaged Sonic fans that talk down to Sonic 06, Secret Rings, and asking why Sonic 4 isn’t in it. Te heh xD

  10. avatar Anon

How bad you are at this game was actually making me angry watching the video.

  11. avatar Mike

The play tester appears to really suck ass at playing Sonic. Level looks pretty cool to me.

  12. Man, this guy sucks at games.

Will wait to see proper gameplay footage before I make up my mind.

    • avatar Secreat

I know about it. I think they will anonuce it with demo at TGS. AndSPOILERI think on Gamescom and TGS we will see other rival battles and HD reenders of Shadow and Silver.

  13. avatar Rob

“This Guy” wasn’t the one playing the game in the video.
    READ, people.

  14. As bad as all the new Sonic games ave been, there’s no way I’m picking the new one up just based on it being “retro.”

I, for one, will be waiting for the reviews to come rollin’ in.

    • avatar 1990s

Not all sonic games suck not like sonic adventure or the advance or rush series. I think it was sonic 2006, sonic unleashed, and sonic 4. But 2006 was the worst sonic game ever!

  15. It’s not helped by the fact that whoever’s playing it is excruciatingly bad – I’m sure he/she was holding the pad upside down!

    • That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking. I couldn’t help but feel that if I was the one controlling it I could’ve made it look a little more fun and less frustrating. That’s assuming the persons failings weren’t caused by any kind of poor control design.

  16. avatar Some Guy

To be fair, I feel that the camera is too zoomed-in to be ready for an incoming jump, or an enemy, and I feel like this whole ‘spin the camera’ gimmick is lame. Doesn’t look like a fun level, even when you’re not bad at spinning the gimmicky level around.

  17. avatar Jo Woods

No way dude that is just way too cool!

    wow you suck.

    • avatar Carlitooz

Personally I peefrrred it just as an Xbox and PS3 exclusive but I suppose I can live with the PC Version .I guess but as we’ve heard rumours of it many times I’m not sure if I’m counting on it .

    • avatar Wahyu

Aye, it does. I tried it out yaetsrdey, and it worked perfectly. Don’t forget to set the clock at around June 23rd. You must be disconnected from XBL, of course.

  19. avatar Berut

Its not exactly exciting but it really isnt that bad, especially if you see the rest of the NONE cart areas. I had no faith in this game UNTIL I saw the running parts. Really well put together areas with great look. EVERY GAME has had levels that just are not as pun as the rest. The labyrinth area gives me just a tad bit of hope.

  20. avatar Berut

for got to mention, that yeah I lost the faith in this game after seeing the 1st stage clips, and now that I seen full played stage 1 area, I thought it was ok, but stage after, minus the mine cart, is what it should be.

  21. avatar JRedmond3

Its only $5 cause at this point it looks like that’s about all it’ll be worth.

  22. avatar JOEI

wierd.. cuz it looked fun as hell. it all looks fun as hell.

  23. avatar SKG

it kind of reminds me of the cart Sonic rode in Sonic Triple Trouble for game gear, except without the angle change and camera movements.

  24. avatar Dsnyder

“Why the fuck does sonic need a car? Why does sonic need to still exist?”

    Yahtzee.

  25. avatar NOOB!!!

Man if you do not know how to play do not say that the level sucks!
    Noob are everywere this days…

  26. avatar Tundra

Apparently they have now removed the stage, I guess that’s one of the reasons it’s still delayed. Sega tested the ice.
Minecart isn’t in the complete version.
Or else Sega’s HQ gets burned to the ground.

vemonoususus on April 16, 2011 this nigga talking needs to sit up and get that hand out from behind his head lookin sigh like a monkey, making us look bad

  27. avatar Anonymous

just shit level design i think….

  28. avatar sonic 4 sucks!

im an unfortunate owner of this mistake of a game. I wish it was in disk form so i could blow it up. Sonic isnt the same anymore, SEGA seems to enjoy kicking its frachise character in the balls. What happend why cant they actually spend time on their games mainly sonic so they can have a great product for everyone to enjoy. You dont see nintendo making an A** out of their frachise characters. SEGA needs to hire some new people or management because im sick of seeing god aweful sonic games.

  29. avatar show plates

wow i can remeber when sonic was first released , it was the game to have , http://www.show-plates.com

  30. avatar 1990s

Well Sonic games were awesome like through 1991-2007 because when that sorry behind sonic unleashed came out, things sucked. I mean sonic unleashed was a good game but at night you have to turn into a ugly werehog. They should have keeped him as a cute hedgehog like he always been. And the 2006 sonic sucked too. And I also think sonic 4 sucks I mean, listen to the music. It sounded nothing like the genesis sonic. Not even labyrinth zone either. But sonic colors is a awesome and cute game and the new sonic generations coming out is gonna be so good! but the three most hated sonic games I hate are sonic 2006, sonic unleashed, and this sorry sonic 4 game. My favorite sonic game is sonic adventure. And i’m am a Mario fan but Ilike sonic too. Mario is a cute plumber;) P.S. I am a 12 year old girl.

I remember the first sonic, when i played on the megadrive system and now i play with Sonic on my gp2x wiz console. :) http://guidaprestiti.org
