Valve is getting their Mac on
By: | March 8th, 2010

We all knew it was coming, but it’s official now.  Valve – and their shiny Steam boat – are coming to Macs everywhere! It’s planned launch is in April, and Valve’s games – Counter-Strike, Half-Life series, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2 – will be ready too.

But, that’s not all they have up their sleeves.  More into after the break. Read more… »

While we know the Wii has been injuring its victims, a new study from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine shows that playing the Wii can actually lower depression among the elderly.  A new term coined “exergames,” a combination of fun game play combined with exercise, significantly improved the mood and mental-health of the elderly suffering with Subsyndromal Depression (SSD).

While the study took a very small sample size, the majority of the participants saw a significant improvement.  I’d say that’s enough to replicate the experiment in larger groups.  Here’s to the Wii saving the elderly from their misery. Read more… »

When our most anticipated title is finally released, we tend to go on a gaming marathon.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as it doesn’t detract from our personal responsibilities, and we’re able to keep the frequency of the sessions to a minimum.

When players are presented with a challenge that can be achieved with the help of your partner, like raising a virtual child, it can be a rewarding experience.  But the challenge should be put on the backburner when you have an actual child to raise.  Unfortunately, a South Korean couple got the memo too late and learned the consequences of too much too often. Hello and welcome to your Weekly Recap! Before you get settled in, I wanted to thank everyone who posted a haiku comment on last weeks post; I’m sure it caused Dylan immeasurable pain and suffering. If that isn’t thanks enough, then you’re too hard to please.

You may be wondering why this is going up early on Monday instead of mid-late on Sunday… well, I can assure you that it has absolutely nothing to do with Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I’ve only played that game like 24 hours in the six days since it’s release. And I definitely wasn’t up all Saturday night playing it online.

Luckily, the rest of Gamer Limit’s addiction to this game hasn’t slowed them down. So, read on for this week’s articles in Recap-O-Vision!

Back in 2008, did anyone think we’d be playing a brand new Mega Man game in the style of the 8-bit NES classics? If so, could you fathom that we’d be getting another one just like it less than two years later?

Despite concerns that it would feel too dated, Mega Man 9 was warmly received by gamers and press alike. It was a return to form after being lost in a forest of chip-collecting RPG tedium and bloated, plot-hole ridden drama. This was how Mega Man was supposed to be!

Solid in its own right, it’s possible that Mega Man 9 rode by thanks to nostalgia. On the other hand, Mega Man 10 has to justify its existence.

I’m not a fan of wireless controllers. Oh, I agree that they are convenient. There is no risk of living room traffic tripping over the cord and either disconnecting the controller or yanking the console itself off the stand. Want to play a game from the bathroom using a series of angled mirrors to view the TV set down the hall? Go nuts.

We can probably agree that the first controller to get wireless “right” was the GameCube’s WaveBird. I remember picking one up on a whim at Walmart and loving it instantly. It was so reliable! Sure, it felt a bit lifeless with force feedback removed, but the battery life was great!

Those tiny concessions were only the start of my misgivings.

Scribblenauts was easily one of the most innovative titles of last year, so it’s really no surprise that 5th Cell is working on a sequel. According to GoNintendo, an article in Nintendo Power details the latest iteration of the game, stating it will contain more than 10,000 new words and 120 new levels, with the bulk of the words being focused on adjectives.

Perhaps the best news to come from the article is the fact that 5th Cell specifically addresses the games  controls, which were more than frustrating for some, especially when trying to pick up or manipulate small objects.

[At Gamer Limit we are quite privy to reading random blog posts. At times, we'll even post the best of the best on the front page. So enjoy our latest blog editorial!]

Have you ever been on a date with someone who, every time you brought up stuff that you were interested in, replied with something neutral like “oh yeah, I like that too,” or “yeah, (such-n’-such thing) is alright”?

They made no attempt to really rock the boat or disagree with you. Maybe you’ve been that person – don’t be shy to admit it to yourself; I’ve certainly done it before. How did you feel about them as they made no attempt to create any difference of opinion? I bet it was probably the most boring date you’ve ever been on in your entire life (unless you’ve been on multiple dates like that, I suppose).

The Limitcast returns this week with yet another live episode, and this time (unfortunately) the show is completely free of user submitted pornography. Worry not though, brave listeners, as Chase Cook, Paul Clark, Shawn Evans and myself worked diligently to provide you with enough riveting content to more than account for its absence.

This week we discuss Bioshock 2, Alien vs Predator, the Ubisoft DRM fiasco, and perhaps most notably, Shawn’s Master Blaster fueled nerd rage.

Over the course of the week, Valve heightened its audience’s interest by updating Portal with encrypted radio messages spread throughout the game.  Undoubtedly, the bizarre update had fans salivating through their teeth.  What could Valve possibly be hiding up their sleeves?
