If all we knew about Japan was filtered to the rest of the world through their media, we’d think the Japanese is a country full of sick and twisted demented individuals.  From Tokyo gore films to the exploitation of hand drawn children, the country has a unique way of expressing itself in the most colorful art forms.

In an ironic contrast, the country has the lowest crime rate, the highest life expectancy, and is one of the most environment friendly countries in the world.  Despite being built from a bloody and violent past, Japan’s basis is centered around humbleness and respect for all things.  And maybe it’s a model nation the rest of the world can learn from.  Who knows?

Despite all the ironies, the country is taking steps to ban provocative images of “visual depictions” of characters who appear to be 18 and younger. Read more… »

Presumably to coincide with the start of the new F1 season this coming weekend, Codemasters have confirmed their plans to release F1 2010 this September. The game will be a sequel to F1 2009 which was only released on the Wii, PSP and iPhone, and will this time feature on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. As expected, it will include all of the official teams and drivers from the coming season including the return of Michael Schumacher and the Korean International Circuit.

Codemasters are renowned for their racing pedigree in the genre having developed high quality titles such as GRiD and DiRT 2, and F1 2010 is said to utilise the Ego Engine that powered these titles. As a result, we can expect a “highly advanced damage model,” along with dynamic weather and “extensive competitive multiplayer options.”

Gamer Limit Review: Fret Nice
By: | March 10th, 2010

It’s not often I get to use the term “musical platformer”. In fact, without creating some diabolical contraption to mix Mario and Musical Chairs, it seems unlikely I’ll be using it a lot in the future either.

Fret Nice accomplishes this without the use of furniture, however, as you are able to use your guitar peripheral to strum, pluck or twang your way through each level. It is certainly the first time I’ve used my guitar for anything other than the arthritis-inducing, colour matching Guitar Hero and Rock Band. However, does it measure up to other platforming stalwarts?

After much scrutiny and debate, Microsoft has finally conceded, and effective immediately, they have updated the network’s code of conduct to acknowledge gays and lesbians. Before the change, users were banned from displaying their sexual orientation in their profiles and gamer tags.

Because of the adolescent behavior displayed in games, I don’t blame Microsoft for ever banning sexual identity in the first place.

But to those who take a mature stance and proudly embrace their sexual orientation, this is a huge step in a progressive movement. Read more… »

Over the past few years it seems that gamers have gained an odd obsession with zombies. Everything from hardcore shooters like Left 4 Dead to casual tower defense games such as Plants vs. Zombies have been over run with the walking dead. The latest game to feature these undead dullards is Age of Zombies on the PlayStation Network.

This downloadable title, playable on both the PS3 and PSP, is your typical top-down shooter, much in the vein of the old SNES classic Smash TV. You take on the role of Barry Steakfries, a generic mash-up of various action movie icons much like Duke Nukem, who is at odds with the mad scientist Professor Brain. At the start of the game Professor Brain sends a bunch of zombies though time in order to rewrite history. Of course our hero Mr. Steakfries can’t let that happen, so he jumps into the time portal after them. Read more… »

This week is absolutely rife with indie news, and this little bit is really drool-worthy, believe me. Until now, indie games that have any chance of making it in the main stream have to be featured on Steam, Impulse, or some other digital distribution platform for gamers to indulge. Generally speaking it’s been a sweet deal for indies, the only problem is being unable to control content.

ModDB.com hopes to remedy this problem by introducing Desura, the first digital distribution platform designed solely for indie games and the gamers who love them. Right now it’s unclear if Desura will feature a client like Steam or Impulse, or if it will be a website only ordeal like Direct2Drive, but I think it’s safe to say indie gamers and their developers should be pretty excited.

Why you ask? Hit the jump for more features and why you should be as excited about Desura as I am.

This week in What Are YOU Playing? I’ll be surprised if anyone replies with a comment other than: “Bad Company 2, douchebag, now rack off and let me get back to knifing baddies.”

Mega Man 10 is already available on WiiWare (Yes, we know that nobody uses it), while PlayStation (March 11) and Xbox (March 31) owners will have to wait a little while longer to pick it up on their respective PSN or XBLA.

The Road to IGF 2010
By: | March 8th, 2010

The independent game market has exploded over the last few years, largely due to more accessible means of distribution, such as Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Network. In fact, many of the games developed for these platforms owe their huge success to the exposure garnered from their IGF wins.

Even still, the Independent Games Festival goes significantly unnoticed by the gaming community at large, despite numbers continually growing for the San Francisco based event. In fact, this year’s IGF is the largest to date and with good reason: the entries for this year are simply amazing in design, concept, and execution.

If you haven’t been following the nominations and news that have peppered gaming websites since this January, read on to learn more about the five finalists that will likely be gracing your console of choice soon enough.
