Today developer Cryptic Studios announced that the super hero based MMO Champion Online is no longer coming to consoles.

Cryptic originally announced an Xbox 360 and PS3 version would hit alongside the PC edition back in September 09. The developer later changed its plans stating that the console versions would arrive sometime in the future.

In a recent post on the Champions Online forum, Cryptic creative director Jack Emmert stated, “100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be,” and that “there are no current plans for a console version.”

The sad thing is, back in August Cryptic said that it was “ready to go” on the Xbox 360 version but “until we get the go ahead from Microsoft, right now we’re sort of waiting.” The developer added “it just takes time for the big beast known as Microsoft to get moving.”

This is some pretty bad news for console gamers looking to get their MMO on. This would have been Cryptic’s first attempt at getting the MMO experience on a console and would probably have given the developer some useful experience for its upcoming Marvel Universe Online. Hopefully Cryptic can reallocate some resources so that Marvel Universe Online can be all that it’s cracked up to be.

  1. Talk about odd timing. This came just after cynicalmonkey’s great post on MMOs and consoles.

    Marvel Universe Online isnt happening…

  3. With the DC Universe Online coming to PC and PS3, that could be a bad omen for Champions. Guess we’ll find out pretty soon…
