Over at 1UP, someone with access to an alpha build of the upcoming XBLA and PSN game Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 leaked a smattering of images (of which the header image is one) of the game in motion, along with a video.  While the video was clearly taken with a home video camera, it still gives us a (somewhat) clear look at what we can expect from the game.

Check out this nostalgic footage after the jump, along with some of the leaked images that accompanied the video.  Then, feel free to share your thoughts on what you’ve seen in the comments, or head over the official Sonic the Hedgehog forum thread for more in depth discussion!

  1. Finally, they’re getting away from these retardedly complex storylines and addon characters. Returning Sonic to his original state is about the best thing Sega can do this year.

  2. It even sounds like they have gone for the old Sonic style music!

I’m even more excited about this game now! I just hope they don’t over-charge us especially since there’s more than 1 episode to it.

  3. Hell yes, this looks sweeeeeet.

  4. Damn phone won’t play the video. But the pictures look hot!

  5. And thank god Sonic Team isn’t developing. DIMPS has made the only decent Sonic games since Sonic 3 in 1994.

  6. That looks like the most awesome thing ever.

  7. I’m still not convinced. I refuse to forgive two decades of crap so quickly.

  8. I’m a broken down old man Dylan. I’ve been beaten down by too many bad Sonic games. The cuts are just too deep. :-(

  9. Ladies and Gentleman, you can be a better person and have faith in this game, have faith in the developers and have faith in humanity.
Or, you can be like Shawn.
And for those who need reminding of the kind of person Shawn is: http://gamerlimit.com/2009/11/limitcast-episode-25-preshow-discussion-future-of-pc-gaming/
That’s right, he is the kind of person to get 39% on Lego Rock Band on Super Easy.
The choice is yours people, make the right choice, not the Shawn choice.

  10. The “alpha” really shows lol. Shame on you if you don’t know what I mean

  11. Sonic 2 was the first platformer I truly fell in love with in my early gaming years. I’ve been dying for a Sonic game that returns to its roots. I really hope this delivers.

I can Die happy now, SEGA has finally come to their senses. =D

(This is all providing they don’t screw it up)

    • Just watch, after the Splash Hill Zone, Sonic gets knocked out, and you must play the rest of the game as the crappy supporting cast. And I’m not talking about Tails and Knuckles.

Or one of the powerups critical to the game is the Werehog transformation powerup…yeah, this could go really badly.

    • WHAT?! using a name starting with H give you a pic of Haku-man? AWESOMERS!!!

    • avatar Hank

It could… but lets hope it dosen’t.

    • avatar T. Snyder

Dylan, SEGA promised that the only playable character is Sonic. Don’t worry.

Did ya’ll know that the level designer for this game was the level designer for Sonic 3 & Knuckles

  14. avatar 02Edge

I’m not sure if this will be disappointing to you all, but…

YOU CAN PLAY AS SUPER SONIIIIIIIIIIIIIC!!!!!
    SWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!

    here’s proof
go on google and type in “sonic the hedgehog 4 episode 1 achievements”. the first thing that should pop up is a link to a web page on xbox360achievements.org that has the list of achievements. scroll ’til you see one called “Golden Flash”

  15. avatar 02Edge

I’m sorry, did I mention that you can play as Super Sonic during NORMAL GAMEPLAY like in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and not just during the final boss

this looks like crap, no offense. but hard core sonic fans like games where you, if your good enough can just burst through any level in under a minute. but this is the type of sonic game, like sonic advanced, where the game is constantly forcing you to slow down or stop. i hope to dear god that this is fake because this just looks like the same slow-paced crap that we’ve bean eating for the last twenty years.
