Today developer Frictional Games, best known for its survival horror series Penumbra, released a new trailer for its up coming horror title Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Apparently Frictional Games is looking to create a truly immersive experience in Amnesia. Taking a page out of the Half-Life 2 formula, Frictional Games stated: “The idea is to convey as clearly as possible that the player is in control of the character throughout the whole game. There are no cut-scenes or any sort of moments where control is taken away to force the narrative forward.”
Currently slated to arrive on the PC, Linux and Mac sometime in August, Amnesia: The Dark Descent can be pre-ordered $16. Frictional Games has stated that if 2,000 pre-orders are placed before May 31 a developer commentary track will be included in the game.
As someone who played though most of the Penumbra games, I am very excited about Amnesia. Frictional Games has perfected the balance between horror, puzzles and atmosphere.
For those of you who have never played a Penumbra game, essentially it’s a first person survival horror game. Unlike other games in the genre, Penumbra didn’t focus on combat. Instead players were forced to sneak around monsters, adding a ridiculous amount of tension to the game.
One of my fondest memories from Penumbra was being chased into a rickety cabin by some monster. I had to hide beneath the floor boards to get away from this thing. I distinctly remember holding my breath as this creature lumbered around above me. It was one of the few times I was actually scared when playing a game.
From the trailer it looks like Amnesia is going to be a lot like Penumbra, except with a faster pace. If you ask me it’s looking fantastic. Are you guys as excited for this as I am? Are there any other Gamer Limiters that are horror junkies like me? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
