alanwake Alan Wake Cancelled For PC

This is possibly the saddest news of the week. Remedy Entertainment, those behind PC stalwarts Max Payne and its sequel, have decided that Alan Wake will no longer be coming to PC. In an announcement made by a Microsoft spokesperson yesterday, it was revealed that the game would instead be exclusive to the Xbox 360 system, making for a more “compelling” experience.

Given that PC gamers have now been waiting for the game for five years, this is sure to come as something of a blow – especially when you consider that they made the announcement just a few months before the game is due to release. Read on for the full quote from Microsoft.

“Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen. We ultimately realised that the most compelling way to experience “Alan Wake” was on the Xbox 360 platform, so we focused on making it an Xbox 360 exclusive. Both Microsoft and Remedy have long histories in PC game development. This decision was about matching this specific game to the right platform.”

Alan Wake is due to release on the Xbox 360 on May 18th 2010.

  1. I had always planned on playing it on the 360 anyway. I suspect I wouldn’t even come close to the PC requirements on my laptop.

  2. Not surprised; PC gaming is on its way out.

  3. They’ve been saying that for years, Chris. It’s sad that they couldn’t have announced this when they announced the release date. This just got people’s hopes up.

  4. Am I the only one who thinks Microsoft’s excuse is total BS? Maybe it’s just me, but I thought a “psychological action thriller” would be a perfect fit for “the intimacy of the PC.” I mean isn’t an intimate experience what makes a thriller thrilling?

  5. I just cried a bit inside. This “was” one of the few titles I was anticipating this year for the PC.

  6. It’s just an excuse to get more people onto consoles, really. The game would have been perfectly fine on PC, but I can’t say I don’t blame them. PC piracy rates are through the roof when compared to console piracy rates.

That’s not to say it doesn’t happen, but the ratio just stacks against the PC.

  7. Actually Ashley, Modern Warfare 2 was pirated a ton more on the Xbox 360 than it was on the PC. I was pretty shocked when I read that bit of a news a couple of weeks ago.

I honestly never even considered that Alan Wake would be released on the PC, so no big deal.

  8. Even though I planned on playing this on 360 the entire time, I agree entirely with what Alex said.

  9. That’s really interesting, Shawn. I would have never guessed that. I know MW2 for PC did receive a massive amount of piracy and it’s still going on today. I wonder how console and PC piracy taper off after time.

  10. I guess 360 owners now have that much more of an incentive for 2010; at the expense of cutting off the patient PC gamers

PC Gaming “has been on the way out” for years now…yet it’s still here, and good developers are still making great games for it. Right now, my Steam cue is brimming with games I have yet to play.

It’s not even a niche market either….as even 2-3 year PCs can easily outres and outframe anything on the 360 or the PS3. Since multi-platform releases aim for the console lowest common denominator…even old PCs can run games like Mass Effect 2 easily at high quality and higher than 360 resolutions, in addition to better textures.

If Alan Wake doesn’t come to the PC (I didn’t expect it to since last year based on them saying they were focusing development on the 360), I simply won’t buy it. Pretty simple, huh? It’s their loss. There are too many good games out there for me to really care.

YEAH i know what u mean the sad thing is that i just found out today!!!!! (sigh) i been waiting fo this game for a long long time!

Of course Microsoft paid the developer money to keep this off the PC. Notice the price for the game on the xbox – $79 !!!!!! On a PC this would have gone for around 50 bucks (the typical price for a triple a title on a PC).

In the end, Microsoft and the developer will LOSE money. They will make a fast buck quick, but with all the other platforms out there, the WII, the PS3 and the PC, they are shutting themselves into a corner.

The xbox 360 is YEARS old, and is lightyears behind the technology in a PC (6 cores, 12 processing streatms) and the mighty Nvidia GX 480.
With full directx 11 support including hardware testulation.

It’s a big financial mistake and hurts gaming on all platforms.

People since we got pretty much completely screwed over,so exepect them to do the same on Max Payne 3

  14. avatar Ingenuity always finds a way, If the MS people think that they can curb piracy by making the game an exclusive for Xbox, they have another thing coming, Xbox can be cracked and wait for the torrents, TPB is back after just one day offline. As for me I alw
