Gamer Limit Review: Polar Panic

Polar Panic

Eiconic is ringing in the new year with their contribution to the already crowded market of downloadable games. Playing upon the wintry feel of Christmas, Polar Panic attempts to turn the puzzle-platformer into something less than simply frustrating.

The young development firm has attempted to broaden the appeal of their game by implementing several modern ideals, perhaps paid for by PETA, as well as adding more game modes than your average puzzler. That said, is a cute character and a few extra features enough to make Polar Panic stand out on the PSN?

A couple months ago Square Enix promised that on the 13th of every month, leading up to the March 9th release of Final Fantasy XIII, new information about the game would be revealed.  Well it’s January 13th, and today the developer once again delivered on their promise, this time with a new trailer complete with English voice acting.

If you think this is just another FFXIII trailer, you would be wrong.  Not only is the voice acting incredible, but it’s completely in sink with the characters’ lips.  This was a real shock for me, because I was expecting another badly dubbed JRPG.  Oh, and that song in the background is the new Leona Lewis single, “My Hands”, which is the theme song for the game. MM10Reveal-Header

Mega Man 10 might still be a couple of months away, but that hasn’t stopped Capcom from revealing the entire boss lineup for the blue bomber’s next adventure.  The full list, which debuted in the Japanese magazine CoroCoro, not only contains the names of all these mechanical monstrosities, but their attacks as well.

You can view the complete boss lineup after the jump, but as you look it over I want you to take a second and think if any of these guys sound familiar.  Their names might seem fresh and new, but their attacks lack originality, as if they have already appeared in previous Mega Man games.  Check out the list and decide for yourself though. Matt Davis, creator of the popular Avatar Golf for Xbox Live’s Indie section, recently lamented the often critical attitude of gamers to indie sports titles: “You will still get compared to the elite developers and their games,” he complained.

Whether it is fair or not to compare something like Avatar Golf to EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour series is an argument for another day, though. Gameloft’s Let’s Golf! for the Playstation Minis collection is what we’re talking about today – a port of an iPhone game that actually does stand up quite well when compared to another full priced title, Hot Shots Golf.

ostagar

You sneaky little bastards, BioWare. After popping in Dragon Age: Origins today to try to slash away at those achievements, I noticed that the “New Content Available” message was flashing, and lo and behold, M.I.A “Return to Ostagar” is now available for download. Not only a week late, the DLC arrives without a peep or tweet anywhere.

Don’t begin rejoicing just yet. Hit the jump to find out why. Read more… »

GT5

The unveiling of GT5′s box art made the release of Polyphony’s forthcoming racing simulation that little more tangible, but that optimism has once again been quashed with the announcement of yet another delay.

The Japanese release date was previously pinpointed for this March, but Sony confirmed today that the game has been delayed due to production issues, and admitted it doesn’t know when the final game will be released. While this delay only applies to Japan, a European and American release date have yet to be announced, so I can only hope that this delay will result in a simultaneous worldwide release.

So there you have it: nobody has the faintest idea as to when we can expect GT5. Spiffing.

Netflix on Wii

In an effort to expand Nintendo’s user base to MORE than every single man, woman, and child in the world, it was just announced by The New York Times that Netflix, everybody’s favorite Blockbuster replacement, is officially coming to Wii.

No longer content to be the only next-gen (*cough*) system without Netflix capability, Reggie and Co. are hopping on the bandwagon.  They’re even going the PS3 route and requiring you to have a special disc in the system to access the Netflix queue.  There’s just ONE little problem…

Episode29_H

This week I’m joined by Chase Cook, Paul Clark, Shawn Evans, and guest Nick Simberg as we digress on the topic of game reviews. We consider the inevitability of bias, preconceived notions, and even developer handouts, but most importantly we respond to your comments on last week’s pre-show discussion – so listen in!

In a whole bunch of business mumbo-jumbo released by SyFy parent company General Electric today, development for a hybrid MMO and television show is intensifying as the latest GE shareholder report states that the game and TV series will be tentatively know as One Earth.

Hoping to revolutionize both the MMO genre and television watching itself, the pair will develop the two concurrently and they’ll play-off each other as their life spans grow. Continue reading for more information and a spiffy video from those behind the project. Read more… »

Last week in his blog, all around swell guy Hironobu Sakaguchi announced that an iPhone game from Mistwalker – developers of JRPG Blue Dragon – will be coming “soon”. While we don’t know what this game specifically is, many have speculated an iDevice version of Blue Dragon.

Last night, we decided to ask what the buzz is all about. While we didn’t get much of a response on Twitter, at least we know one thing. Read more… »

There’s been a revitalization of co-op lately, with nearly every action or shooter game out there including a buddy-up mode to increase replayability. Well, fans of bromance, you can add another title to the party, because the upcoming Splinter Cell: Conviction has followed suit. And it’s not just online co-op, Conviction will feature the coveted and always-ignored offline split-screen mode.

Square Enix has had plenty of time to experiment with the Final Fantasy franchise. Spin-offs, re-imaginings, and tactical games have been explored at great lengths, and now, in the form of The Crystal Bearers, we’re offered something completely different.

Crystal Bearers places you in the shoes of Layle, a hotshot telekinetic sorcerer of sorts, whom harnesses the intense power of said crystals. For your everyday anime fan, this actually sounds like a pretty cool story, but does it prove to be more than your typical fare? Read more… »
