Real Time Strategy: heroin of the hardcore gaming landscape, its consumption not only draining, but soul destroying; its almost sensual draw is intense and powerful. Addicts are careful, for detection is the first step of their inevitable intervention.

The smart ones hide their gear; Red Alert 2 are discs “misplaced” in the depths of a desk drawer, Zero Hour permanently in the drive. Starcraft cracked and shortcuts forged because the mind alerting Zerg are the highest grade of purity known to gamer.

Have you ever been addicted? I was, before I was saved. Saved by the power of gaming diversity itself, the divine being that dripfeeds that cleansing variety, the wonderous balance.

But one cannot truly be cleansed. My past was a sordid one, full of micromanagement, nuke cannons and overlord tanks. Zerg rushes and cannon spams. Follow me as I detail my road to ruin, and my subsequent path to redemption.

Considering there aren’t any playable demos or new full games to donwload for PS3, I would normally tout this update as a colossal failure, but this has been somewhat overshadowed by the european beta release of ModNation Racers. There’s no time to waste however, as the download is only valid for the first 100,000 users, so don’t miss out.

The remainder of this week’s update can be found after the break.

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth marks the third installment in Konami’s ReBirth series, a series with the goal of taking certain franchises back to their roots. I missed Gradius ReBirth, and Contra ReBirth was underwhelming. Naturally, I didn’t have incredibly high expectations of the third ReBirth game.

Imagine my surprise when I played Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, only to find out that it was pretty good. The Castlevania series has been away from its ‘roots’ ever since the smash hit, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, reinvented the series from the ground up.

It would seem, however, that there’s still some merit in remembering the old way.

Suda 51, the charismatic creator of many gaming gems such as Flower, Sun, and Rain, and Killer 7, goes behind the camera in this all new developer’s diary, which takes place in a public lavatory. Complete with a (non Suda) American voice over, this video is just about as over-the-top as Sylvester Stallone.

In short, if you’re a fan of insane action, you need to watch this video, and you may want to pick up No More Heroes 2 on January 26th, 2010.

In a global economic recession, where the majority of games still cost $60 apiece, many people are constantly looking to get the most bang for their buck.  Here at Gamer Limit, we stress the importance of the longevity of games by including a separate score for it in our reviews, but games don’t necessarily have to be long to get high marks in this area.

One way developers can design their games to have more longevity is by making them more replayable, but unfortunately a lot of titles don’t fall into this category.  Developers would rather artificially make a game longer, or tack on multiplayer, than actually work to give a game replayability.  Well, it’s time for people to stand up and demand more from their games.  It’s time for a replay revolution. Avatar was a technological revolution; it brought the aspect of 3D in movies from a gimmicky add-on to the forefront of the future of movie going. Too bad the same can’t be said about the licensed game.

In an effort to not continue to release games that suck, Ubisoft announced today that they plan to spend less on licensed products as they have done in the past. It makes sense, since their efforts at making movies are far superior. Read more… »

Gamer Limit Review: Emberwind
By: | January 20th, 2010

Emberwind

Emberwind is an adorable game, that much is certain. It seems to pay homage to the multitude of platformers many of us played all those years ago when consoles didn’t know what HD was, when you knew what console was better because of how many bits it had, and when blast processing seemed like a neat idea. This feeling of nostalgia is sullied by the fact that you play a gnome.

If, unlike me, you are able to look past the fact that you play a gnome, then hit the jump to find out the other non-gnome related aspects of Emberwind.

For this review we’re taking a look at a game that utilizes hugs and kisses as a scoring mechanic, but don’t worry, it’s not a cuddly Wii game.

If you’re so extreme that you drink Pepsi Max and have music that goes all the way up to 11, then jumping off a very tall building may very well be the next step for you.

Virtually, of course.

In today’s world of 3D graphics and ultra-realistic textures, small 2D gems often go unnoticed and unloved, all because, graphically, they can’t compete with technology as it chugs along. However, thanks to XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare, we’re seeing a resurgence of gamers who are just fine with 2D titles and, dare I say, enjoy them just as much as their modern counterparts.

Larva Mortus is a 2D top-down shooter that is reminiscent of the original Grand Theft Auto titles – only instead of jacking cars and running over pedestrians, you’re equipped with a really huge sword and your trusty six shooter in order to take down all manner of baddies, from zombies to werewolves.

This will be the third and final trailer for Zangeki no REGINLEIV that I post. For some reason, this game resonates with me and I find myself getting really pumped up for it. If you guys need a reason to get excited, maybe I should mention that it’s being developed by Sandlot, makers of the cult favorite Earth Defense Force 2017.

This video is the full trailer. In its four-minute length, it should tell you everything you need to know about the game. Zangeki no REGINLEIV is tailored for the MotionPlus but regular nunchuk style and classic control options are also available. There is a wide variety of weapons including rapid-fire magic staffs and bows that can launch homing arrows on multiple locked targets. Most importantly, there is re-confirmation of four-player online co-op.

So please! Tell me someone other than myself is looking forward to this!

Motion promo

Originally slated for a spring release this year, Sony has announced that its upcoming motion controller will now be available worldwide towards the end of the year in autumn 2010.

Kaz Hirai cited a need to “offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users” for the delay, and went on to reveal that a launch lineup for the controller will also be revealed soon.

Of course, this could spell danger when you factor in a certain highly publicised Microsoft branded rival that is also due to be released around the same time.
