The Tom Clancy series will always have a special place in the video gaming section of my heart. While the modern monoliths of GTA IV, Bioshock and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare often frequent my hard drive, there exists a small collection of games that are never removed.

Within this group can be found classic adventures, such as Grim Fandango, Age of Empires 2, and the earlier Tom Clancy games. In fact, if someone was to ask me to name my three favourite series of military games based loosely on the novels of the prolific American author Tom Clancy, I’d have no choice but to answer with Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six.

Recently, gaming has seen some pretty cool crossovers, such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The recently announced “Playstation Heroes Skin Pack” that will see characters from Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, and Resistance tossed into the world of Nathan Drake and Uncharted.

However, a recent joint announcement from Capcom and Epic Games may top all previous occurences handily. Today, Capcom revealed (through the video below) a couple of new additions to the squad in Lost Planet 2, in the form of two additional skins to use in the game. Needless to say, this crossover is pretty “epic” (see what I did there?!). Read more… »

Colored Game Boy

Well, here it is: your very own anti-drug commercial. It’s been a while since the last Retro Ad, but Game Boy has brought us back with a bang.

There’s nothing I like more than buying a brand new Game Boy, downing an entire bottle of Swiss absinthe, and then tripping balls as “I SEE RED” sears itself into my brain.

Bungie has been reluctant to divulge any real information on Halo: Reach for quite a while now, but it would seem as if the wait is over. Just a few days ago, an interview from Edge Magazine revealed that “It’s not a continuation of the Master Chief story, nor is it the start of a new trilogy”.

Now a whole host of high-res screenshots have released on Bungie’s website showing off the game in its current state. On top of all that, it seems they’ve also released a bit more information on the characters you can expect to meet in Reach.

The denominations in which Xbox LIVE points are sold in has long been a vexation for gamers, since purchasing the points in blocks of 1000 points always leaves left over points on game purchases which are commonly 800 and 1200 points respectively.

However, a Philadelphia attorney has taken matters into his own hands by filing a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft in which he claims Microsoft sells the point blocks in a “scheme to unjustly enrich itself through their fraudulent handling” of his account.

Games-on-Demand

Earlier this month, Major Nelson promised he would begin posting monthly Xbox Live Marketplace release schedules for the gaming public to see.  This is a stark change from the usual routine of simply rolling out new games and DLC at the drop of a hat, so I personally didn’t think he would keep to his word.

Well it appears I’ve been proven wrong, as the Major has once again posted a new schedule for the end of January and beginning of February.  Some notable additions to the list include Halo Wars coming to Games on Demand, and the new Assassin’s Creed II: Battle of Forli DLC.  You can view the complete release schedule after the jump. Today publisher Ubisoft unveiled its new solution to DRM on the PC. The new DRM will not rely on CD checks or installation limits, but rather a simple online authentication that features a ‘cloud’ service that stores saved game online.

The one draw back to Ubisoft’s new system is that you must authenticate every time you wish to play a game. That means there is no offline support. Read more… »

Indie Spotlight Review: Spider

When it comes to non-conventional control schemes, developers are constantly trying to fit square pegs into round holes. The Wii and Sixaxis have often resulted in designers asking themselves, “How do we make the existing experience work with these controls?”, when they should be asking themselves, “What new kinds of experiences will these controls allow us to explore?”.

The iPhone platform is another fertile breeding ground for this kind of poor practice. We’ve seen many attempts to shoehorn an analog stick or d-pad into the touch-screen environment unsuccessfully. This is a shame, since the iPhone offers a surplus of untapped potential for creating new styles of gameplay and control.

When someone takes the risk to create a different experience, there will be something to learn from the effort whether it succeeds or fails. Read on to see what Gamer Limit took away from the time we spent with Tiger Style’s 8-legged app, Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor.

Video game company MumboJumbo today revealed that they are victorious in a $4.6 million lawsuit against beloved publisher PopCap games, renowned for titles such as Plants Vs. Zombies and Peggle.  The reasons cited for said lawsuit?  Fraud and breach of contract, among other things.

“The law allows you to do plenty of things to be successful in business,” said MumboJumbo’s attorney, Marty Rose.  ”However, it does not allow you to commit fraud or interfere with a company’s business relationships. The jury’s verdict is a clear signal that this type of business conduct is not going to be tolerated.” Read more… »

Gamer Limit Review: Dark Void

Dark Void Review 1

On paper, Dark Void sounds like an absolutely fantastic mix of different gameplay styles and ideas that should be a unique and fun experience.  It boldly melds Gears of War’s cover-and-shoot gunplay with The Rocketeer inspired mid-air combat in a package that allows you to immediately go from one to the other with the push of a button.

Unfortunately, games that look great on paper don’t always translate well into real, fun and entertaining products.  When this occurs, it’s typically due to bad execution, and Dark Void is 2010’s first poster child for poor execution by a developer. Read more… »

Sci-fi has come a long way. Decades ago, it was “just for nerds”, before Star Wars came along and changed everything. Then the genre sort of retreated from the limelight, waxed and waned, only to be on top again with recent properties such as J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, and now, the Mass Effect series.

Mass Effect 1 - while generally well received – wasn’t without its problems, but in the recent sequel just about everything has been retooled: some additions are better, some are questionable. Read more… »
