Indie Spotlight Review: Soul
By: | January 29th, 2010

Soul is a new Xbox LIVE Arcade indie title from Kydos Studio with a deceptively simple story. Your job is to guide the soul of a dead man through numerous pits and perils in order to get him into Heaven. Simple concept, right? Of course. Did I mention the massive gelatinous blobs which are keen on eating you? No? Consider yourself warned.

While the gameplay is just one simple mechanic of using your analog stick to guide your soul through numerous levels of pitfalls and traps, there are some delightfully devious rooms that will have you tossing your controller around in anger, but quickly picking it back up in order to finish the game.

The Last Story? Final Fantasy? Wow, Gooch. You really know how to name ‘em, don’t cha?

Joking aside, Mistwalker’s latest big-scale RPG has been announced. The surprise here is that instead of the 360 the game is heading to the Wii with Nintendo handling publishing duties. All we have right now is this barren homepage that marks a 2010 release date for this bad boy. Further details should arrive in March.

In the meantime, hit up the site and enjoy what sounds like another Uematsu tear-jerker.

Chances are you missed it, but back at E3 ’09 a trailer for a game called Flip’s Twisted World was aired. It’s a quirky little platformer that obviously draws inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy. The hook here is that gravity can be reoriented by twisting the Wii Remote. Up becomes down, left becomes right, front becomes back, and so on.

What’s most impressive about this game so far is how polished it looks, and I don’t mean just visually. This is the first project from developer Frozen North Productions, a team that as of right now is only about twelve strong. It’s embarassing that a dozen guys can pull something like this off while the bigger industry players can’t seem to “figure out” the Wii.

Flip’s Twisted World has been flying under the radar, but hopefully this new developer video will get you to take notice. The world could use more solid platformers. The game should land on shelves this spring.

The facts of the case are clear. The characters from the Sherlock Holmes stories created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were recently re-imagined in a film directed by Guy Ritchie. When a major picture hits the theatres, merchandising is sure to follow. Ergo, it is no surprise to this investigator to see the release of Sherlock Holmes Mysteries for the iPhone.

The salient question to be posed, dear readers, is in regards to the quality of said movie tie-in game. Trusting solely to historical data would push us overwhelmingly towards assuming poor quality; movie games are almost always a steaming pile of offal.

However, logic dictates that just because something is likely does not mean that it is certain. Therefore, we must examine the evidence closely to find out if the truth matches our theory. There’s no time to waste. Read on, the game is afoot! (athumb?)

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, billed as a re-imagining of the classic horror franchise, was released last year to decidedly solid reviews.  In fact, Gamer Limit’s own Andrew Kauz gave it an 8.5 in his review.

Given the relatively positive reception the game received, it seems that developer Climax Group still wants another shot at the series, which is published by Konami. Read more… »

Today publisher THQ announced that 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic FPS Metro 2033 is slated to arrive in North America on March 16. Europeans will have to wait until March 19 to get their hands on it.

In case you’ve missed out on this shooter/RPG hybrid, let me fill you in. Metro 2033 is an upcoming Xbox 360 and PC game based on a popular Eastern European cult novel of the same name. The premise is that in 2013 some apocalyptic event take place and turns the planet’s surface into a poisonous wasteland, inhabited only by mutants and monsters. Those that survive have to live in underground tunnels. Gamers take control of Artyom, a survivor who was raised in the tunnel system of Moscow’s metro. As you would expect, Artyom is given a mission to journey outside the Metro and save humanity. Read more… »

After weeks of lackluster content updates, there is little to complain about in the latest PSN Store update. Along with the weekly special offers, there’s some tasty full games such as Thexder Neo, a playable demo and new DLC for UnCharted 2. Assassins Creed II also gets treated to some DLC and, not to be left out, PSP owners can sample some debut DLC for LittleBigPlanet and a free car pack for Gran Turismo.

Personally, I’m looking forward to next week’s PSN update as it is scheduled to deploy an online demo for the sumptuous Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Not that I’m fuming inside, but Xbox 360 owners can download it right now. Oh it’s going to be a long wait.

In the meantime, you can savor this week’s update after the break.

Today is a good day.  For all of you sporting an Xbox Live membership, the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer demo hit the Xbox Live Marketplace this morning.  It is, in a word, fantastic.

The map available for the demo is set in Port Valdez, Alaska.  While this has been available to PC gamers for awhile now (at least to those who preordered it), it’s still nice to dive in with a 360 controller.  And for those of you with PS3′s, never fear!  The Bad Company 2 demo will hit PSN on February 11th. Racing games aren’t for everyone. Car enthusiasts may clutch their $100 force-feedback wireless steering wheels in anticipation of Gran Turismo 5, but most others think these people are just spinning their wheels. In the absence of narrative and varied objectives, what remains to appeal to the average player?

There’s quite a lot, actually. If you haven’t been following racing games in recent years, then you’ll be surprised at just how varied and downright fun some of the genre’s latest offerings are. Best of all, racing games are constantly borrowing from some of your favorite franchises and genres, giving players of all persuasions more and more reasons to slip on a nice pair of racing gloves. Pokeracing, driving to maim, and a racing game with clowns and cream pies all await you after the jump.

In a move that’s not really surprising given recent similar announcements for massive games like Modern Warfare 2, 2K Games stated that Bioshock 2 would not feature any dedicated server support, nor LAN support for either the console or the PC version of the game. This development turned up in a Q&A session on 2K Games’ own Cult of Rapture website.

Making its way around the web recently is the full list of achievements for Just Cause 2, publisher Eidos’s sequel to their 2006 action/adventure game.  While not particularly innovative or extraordinary, Just Cause developed quite the dedicated fanbase, who are clamoring to get their hands on the sequel.

If this leaked achievements list is any indication, they’re going to have a lot of work to do, if they wish to take advantage of everything this island has to offer.  Take a look.
