Alien Breed
Some of you may be shocked to know that Team 17 have done more than the Worms series. I know, I bet you’re glad you were sat down for that revelation, but in 1991 they released a 2D shooter, heavily inspired by the Alien/Aliens movies, called Alien Breed. It met with much critical acclaim, and as these things generally do, produced a rabid fan-base.

In 2009 they released a sequel, or re-imagining, or whatever it is, it’s a new game and it’s called Alien Breed: Evolution, but can it live up to the pressure put on it by their previous classic? Read on to find out.

Without a doubt, one of the hottest games this year is Left 4 Dead 2. Gamers all over the world are fending off the zombie hoards while exploring all the new content, including the popular new game mode Scavenge. Some gamers may be intimidated by such a drastically different game mode, and if you are one of them, don’t fret. I’ve cooked up a basic guide to get you started.

I’ve split this guide up into three easy-to-use sections. First, I’ll discuss the Basics, then I’ll move onto Beginner Survivor Strategies, and after that I’ll finish up with Basic Infected Strategies. While it’s not necessarily rare for game servers for older games to be shut down, EA dropped the bomb today by announcing the server shut down of several of its titles for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 gamers. The thing that has many gamers in an uproar is that many of the included titles are the ’09 iteration of their respective games.

Usually server shutdown announcements are coupled with a healthy dose of time for gamers to patch their wounds and move on to greener and greater fields, however EA has stated that the servers for the games in the list below will be gone on February 2nd, 2010 which is exactly a month away. In addition, it seems while gamers will be able to play their games until the cut off date, many community forums and programs for the affected games will be closed before then.

Tunneling under the mainstream radar, EVE Online has grown to become one of the most successful MMOs of the last decade. It’s been called the “smart person’s” MMO, “spreadsheets online”, and “where economists go to wind down”. But its status is one of conjecture amongst gamers – almost everyone has heard a story about EVE. Its sheer scope, range and possibility appeal to many, until they find themselves inside the universe and completely flustered.

EVE is unique within its genre in that the game is not run by the developer, but by the player. Its developers, CCP, simply set the stage and provide the tools. From there, a limited amount of NPC elements provide new players with some guidance and intermediate players with some challenge. But the real game lies deep within the central space of the universe where there are few rules, no guards and one of the most unforgiving, challenging and intense environments that gaming has ever seen.

RunMan: Race Around the World is the kind of game that just makes you feel good. As opposed to most popular games of our age being centered around having a realistic look and serious aesthetic, RunMan: RAtW puts a lot of effort into being the opposite. Its innocence reminds me of a cross between an old children’s book and children’s cartoon. The brainchild of the game, Tom Sennett, has made quite a few small games based around RunMan, but here comes RunMan’s swan song, so to speak.

Our tale starts with someone holding a race. The track? The entire world. Naturally, when the impossibly famous RunMan shows up to compete in the race, everyone forfeits. RunMan, hardly being one to accept the title of victor by default, agrees to run around the world as fast as he can, regardless of the issue of competition.

Gamer Limit's 2010 Gaming Resolutions

The decade is coming to a close and I still don’t know what to call it. We had the eighties, and then the nineties, and then… what? The Ohs? I’ve heard people use “oughties” and “naughties.” I kinda like that last one. Sounds provocative!

On topic, it is tradition to welcome the new year with a list of resolutions that will never be met. I figure that if we are going to make promises to ourselves that we aren’t going to keep, we might as well make them as frivolous as can be. And what is more frivolous than video games? Nothing… except maybe the World Rock Paper Scissors Society.

So raise your glass and ring in the new year with these 2010 resolutions as suggested by the the Gamer Limit crew! Read more… »
