Wing Commander III

Here we go again. I always get a bit teary when it comes to Retro Day, especially on a week when it’s my birthday and I realize that we’ve seen out yet another year of spectacular titles.

But enough of that soppy crap, let’s get stuck into some juicy retro morsels. This week I’ll be taking you back in time to the good old days of FMV, with a game that was – at the time – the most expensive video game ever produced.

So strap yourself in, keep those fidgeting digits away from the eject button, and prepare yourself for a trip back to Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger.

I must admit, I nearly forgot to post this week’s PSN Store content since it’s been over 2 weeks since the last update.

Nevertheless, the first update of 2010 has been bestowed upon us, filling the PSN Store with new content including a playable demo of Dark Void and some DLC for Borderlands, SOCOM Confrontation and a certain pair of monopolising music games.

You should know the drill by now – follow the link for a full roundup of this week’s Store update.

Today Microsoft announced that Remedy’s “psychological action thriller”  Alan Wake will be receiving new content in the form of downloadable episodes.

Microsoft executive Robbie Bach stated, “Imagine the TV show Lost as written by Steven King and filmed by David Lynch, and you have Alan Wake. Story-driven like a TV series, Alan Wake will be told in episodes, with even more episodes available on Xbox Live after its launch this year.” Read more… »

Oh my god, Xexyz?!

Oh, Hexyz Force: A similarly difficult-to-pronounce game title, but one that has the potential to be just as awesome as that little-known NES game. Announced today by Atlus, Hexyz Force is an upcoming PSP RPG set to be unleashed upon North America in May, promising “one of the most narrative-driven portable RPGs of all-time.”

Well, when you put it like that! Read on to get all of the details on what could be a great addition to those RPG-starved North American PSPs.

Microsoft has announced during their CES press conference that over one thousand of your favorite old-school games will soon become available on Xbox Live and Games for Windows. Once again, those games you wasted hundreds of quarters on, or have collecting dust in your closet, will become available for you to purchase on both Xbox Live and PC.

For those that have kept up with some of Microsoft’s many rumors, “Game Room” is a feature that was found in an Xbox survey a couple of months ago. Well, it is real, and to be quite honest, very intriguing. Read on for more details and a video after the break. Read more… »

The release date of Project Natal has always been a rumor. However, during the Microsoft CES press conference, Robbie Bach has confirmed those rumors, stating that Natal will be available “this holiday season.”

While other details have yet to be released, you can be rest assured that Gamer Limit will be covering every last detail of Xbox’s newest motion controlled gaming device. If I had to guess, E3 will be the venue for Microsoft to release every final detail and allow us to get our grubby hands (and legs) on it from the showroom floor.

Fresh from today’s sleep-inducing CES conference in Las Vegas, Kaz Hirai has confirmed the long rumoured plans for Sony’s expansion of the PSN to other devices.

Pretentious PR spiel aside, a single PSN network ID is said to be accessible across all Sony media products and services, which means the virtual wallet you use to purchase  games will also work universally. Starting from the beginning of next month, Sony’s video service will also be available though Bravia Tvs, Blu-Ray devices and PCs.

In conjunction with this new network Kaz Hirai also announced the birth of a new division within the company, aptly named Sony Entertainment Network.

The release of Gran Turismo 5 is drawing ever closer now that 2010 is underway, but being able to visualise the final box art makes it all the more feasible. Gran Turismo 5. It’s actually happening. Except nobody knows exactly when.

Hideki Kamiya of Platinum Games, the mastermind behind Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, knows action. Three years ago, after Capcom sacked Clover Studio, and became Platinum Games, it was announced that Kamiya was working on a brand new project.

That project was Bayonetta. With this new IP, Kamiya made promises of more action than Dante, Samanosuke, or Chris Redfield could ever hope to deliver. Did he make good on those promises? My answer is a resounding yes. Read more… »

A few fellow Limiters and myself were given the opportunity to test out this bad boy well before its release date. At the time, I must say that I was more than a little surprised by just how much action Ubisoft had managed to pack into a 20-minute demo.

Unfortunately, with the release of Assassin’s Creed II, this product (from the same developer) simply fell off gamers’ radars. The movie was incredible, and I’d wager that plenty of fans just didn’t want to be let down by another movie-to-game dud.

But is James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game truly a monumental failure? Or is it simply an unappreciated, albeit unfinished, action title?

Indie Spotlight Review: Ziro
By: | January 6th, 2010

Ziro screen 1

The puzzle game market is a tough egg to crack.  The recent flood of casual software included a few standout gems, but with so many knock-offs and carbon copies, it’s often hard to discern the good from the bad.

Some games try to set themselves apart by having a unique aesthetic (QuantZ), while some mesh other genres together in an attempt to be unique (Puzzle Quest).  Ziro is a brain-taxing dice-math game with a “Stop global warming!” message delivered by a battle-hardened snowman mascot.  True story.

Art of Pong Beach

[Every week, Gamer Limit scours the underbelly of the internet to bring you the finest releases from the indie scene. Check back each week to see what we recommend. Feel free to check out our full schedule right here!]

When Pong was released back in 1972, I don’t think anyone expected people would still be making modifications to the classic formula more then 35 years later.  While the game got a much needed reboot on the Playstation in 1999, with enhanced 3-D visuals and power-ups, it’s unfortunately considered by many to be too simple for today’s high end consoles.

With the advent of the iPhone, and a new desire for bite sized gaming experiences on the go, the world has seen a new reemergence of simple games like Pong.  Independent developer DC Software Arts is not ready to sit idly by and let people play the same old boring version that was released almost four decades ago.  They have spiced things up with their own interpretation on the classic title named The Art of Pong.
