Those who have been pining to sample Sony’s upcoming shooter MAG are now in luck, as the open beta has started today and is currently waiting to be downloaded on the PSN store.

MAG has gained ample anticipation for its promise of 250 player online battles, and the beta allows you to experience such audacity in its Domination mode. Or, if that sounds too daunting, there is also the Sabotage mode, which houses a more modest 64 players.

The only catch is that the beta will be ending on January 10th, but fear not as the full release is not too far away – the battle shall re-commence on January 26 in North America and Asia, January 28 in Japan, and January 29 in Europe.

  1. Was in the private beta months ago. Game is OK. Have fun with the 2GB+ download rofl.

  2. Hmm, it won’t seem to connect to the servers for me.

  3. I had that problem earlier in the afternoon, but it works for me now.

  4. didn’t massively like what i played at eurogamer but i am open to giving it anither chance

    Tips:

Private Alpha: Dev has no idea what to do with his game and requires radical suggestions from a young playerbase.

Public Alpha: There’s no reason to do this other than show off.

Private Beta: The dev seriously wants serious suggestions, feedback, but most importantly, wants to balance things and monitor players.

Public Beta: They just want publicity to raise sales.

I think you have a rather cynical and misinformed opinion of the purpose of testing a game there.
The fact a dev would have “no idea what to do with a game” is a game that would never get to the point of having a prototype ready for any form of Alpha.
Any form of expenditure is hardly going to be done for “no reason except to show off”.
And public betas fill most of the same criteria you mentioned in the private beta, as well as adding an element of stress testing for servers.

  7. I played in private Beta. I found it fairly entertaining and it should provide a dedicated community for those that out the time in.

Hey, if Killzone 2 still has a fairly busy player lobby, then this should be a welcome addition to the PS3′s online shooter library.

  8. I want to play this, but I’m just not interested in getting engrossed in a huge online game. Honestly I prefer just sticking with MW2 for all my FPS online gaming for right now.

  9. i have downloaded it now but won’t get a chance to play till later in the week and i am trying out this being optomistic thing i here such praise for

Alpha is normally the phase where the game mechanics begin to work and a very crude and basic game is laid out. It is not in a playable format, and most of the times it’s before the entire storyline, all subelements and microadditions are added.

Beta is where the core game is finished and the major mechanics and story are set in stone, this is the phase where people tweak difficulty, gather opinions and suggestions, and probably the only form that should be released outside a company (Unless you want to give false impressions on players and ruin your sales, of course ;)

    I admit I’m a cynic, but that’s not a problem for me :)

The game lacked something, couldn’t put my finger on it…
On my 20MB cable line there was still lag and the spawning is a pain!!

  12. Yeah…I’m still not much of a fan of it…

I want to be….but it just doesn’t feel right.
