Use at the risk of extreme frustration

Ladders have existed since long before the written word — evidence from Mesolithic rock paintings suggests that the ladder has been used for at least 10,000 years. This is a long time to further develop and perfect such a common and useful invention, yet, from most accounts, ladders haven’t changed much in their history. Sure, minor improvements have been made such as the A-frame, but the basic design of the ladder is one that doesn’t demand a lot of improvement.

The video game ladder has seen a similar lack of innovation, and although resolution has increased and bloom has made those metal rungs look just so very pretty, not much has changed for this pixel-infused climbing device.

The problem with the videogame ladder is that, while real world ladders are simple and intuitive, video game ladders are horrible mockeries of usability. What went wrong? How have videogame ladders become so tragically separated from their real-world counterparts?

Gamer Limit Review: Tekken 6
By: | December 11th, 2009

Tekken 6

I still remember the excitement that I felt every time I popped in my demo disc to play Tekken 2. Knowing full well that my parents would never allow me to purchase the full game at such a tender age, I revelled in the violent glory of two 60-second rounds.

Tekken 6 attempts to counter the successes of Soulcalibur IV and Virtua Fighter 5 by implementing a lengthy campaign mode – similar to “Tekken Force” and “Devil Within” of previous iterations – but does the unique twist improve the overall experience, or does it simply fall flat on its face? TransformersIf you are like me, and for your own sake I hope you aren’t, then there are a few things that are guaranteed to cause excitement, exhilaration and possibly even jubilation.

These include Samurai Pizza Cats, any superhero comic and teen romance vampire novels. I mean monster trucks, ignore the last one, I said monster trucks. Anyway, at the top of that list is almost certainly Transformers, so hit the jump to see the debut trailer from GameTrailers.com for Transformers: War For Cybertron. Read more… »

Released a few days ago, Edmund, an entry in the Adult/Educational Compo at TIGSource. While at first glance, Edmund appears to be a game created just for ‘shock value’, but with a little digging I’ve found it does go a lot deeper then expected.

Paul Greasley, the creator of Edmund, recently let us pick his brain on the ‘demon’ he has unleashed.

Moxxi Header

When Sean reviewed the last Borderlands DLC, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, he pointed to a distinct lack of new loot and character progression as its main faults. Indeed, in a game heavily based around getting exciting new loot and progressing your character, these are some pretty major drawbacks.

Well, Gearbox appears to have learned at least partially from these glaring omissions. The company’s next expansion was officially revealed today as Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, a new experience based around what the company calls “three new Riot Mode arenas where players will endure an onslaught of Pandora’s baddest enemies.” This expansion promises to add more than new enemy types, including a storage system for loot emergencies and, most importantly, the ability to gain two new skill points to apply to your likely maxed-out characters.

Mega Man 10 is happening

Mega Man 10 is happening

Rocky Balboa had one good fight left in him. After demonstrating to a brash young Mason Dixon that old people can still bring the noise, the Italian Stallion hung up his gloves for good. However, there is another Sly Stallone character who after making a literal killing coming out of retirement desires to embark upon a fifth adventure.

Mega Man is more like John Rambo in this regard.

Nintendo Power has just revealed that Mega Man 10 is on its way to WiiWare sometime in 2010. PSN and XBLA releases have yet to be confirmed, but it’s pretty much a sure thing. Read more… »

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

[Every Thursday is Retro Day at Gamer Limit, so kick back and enjoy the classics. Feel free to check out our full schedule right here!]

Comedy in video games, as with all forms of media, is such a finely balanced thing. One man’s comedic gold is another’s tasteless trash. Being consistently funny is something very few can do; those that do manage it are revered forever.

The LucasArts team of the 90s is one such revered developer, churning out one humorous adventure after another. Their hilarious take on the B-movie horror genre is one of the most loved games of the 16-bit genre. With a name like Zombies Ate My Neighbors, how could they possibly fail?

Madden NFL Arcade

Long have I missed the days of the N64 NFL Blitz games. Since those golden years, I like to think I have matured somewhat; and with that maturity, a sim sports fan has emerged. But going back to my arcade football roots is something I have always been hopeful of.

Madden NFL Arcade is EA’s latest attempt at bringing casual, arcade-style football to both XBLA and PSN. And with a genre that is slowly drying up, you would think EA would be able to capitalize. Right?
