PSP Spider-man

To go along with the recent release of LittleBigPlanet on the PSP, Sony decided to send out a mass email advertising its upcoming PSP LBP accessory pack.  Nothing too extravagant: a Sackboy case, a new strap, and some stickers.  The bottom of the image, however, says something odd:

“For series PSP-1000, PSP-2000, PSP-3000, PSP-4000, and PSPgo.”  The PSP-4000 hasn’t been announced (or even mentioned) by Sony yet.  The PSPgo came out less than three months ago, and now they’re already planning on bringing out another iteration?  Sigh…

See the ad for yourself after the jump.  Maybe it’s a typo.  Probably not.

Oh, snap!  After being denied OFLC classification in Australia for their upcoming game Aliens vs. Predator, game developer Rebellion re-submitted it to the OFLC’s review board.  They had originally refused to censor the game, essentially guaranteeing that it would never see an Australian release if the appeal failed, which seemed incredibly likely.

The kicker: they actually won.  See what they had to say about it after the jump.

Gran Turismo PSP

When Gran Turismo, previously known as Gran Turismo Mobile, was first unveiled for the PSP, many gasped at such a tantalisingly mammoth prospect. As time went on however, the legitimacy of the project became increasingly uncertain, until now, a full half a decade since its initial announcement before the PSP was even born, it has finally been released from Polyphony’s scrupulous hands.

So then, considering fans have been pining over this release for such a long time, is Gran Turismo worth the wait, or is it too little too late?

When one considers Dragon Ball Z, thoughts of excessive grunting, seizure-inducing special effects, and poor animation bogged down by countless filler episodes come to mind. In the gaming realm, this translates to numerous fighting games over a broad range of platforms with very little to show for itself.

Very rarely is the manga/anime adapted correctly to appease fans of the series and gamers alike, and even then the select few are merely above average and never truly remarkable.

To coincide with the recent Japanese revamping of the series that started a phenomenon (known as Dragon Ball Kai), Monolith Soft and Bandai have released Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, an RPG retelling of the Saiyan saga, beginning with the end of the original Dragon Ball and running through till the start of the Namek timeline.

Can the high flying action transgress genres and keep its appeal through a turn-based, role playing scope? Read more… »

Heavy Header

It was recently revealed that Sony would be allowing a bit of a different approach to trophies for Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain. Rather than bestowing trophies upon the player as he performs certain actions or passes certain milestones, they would instead be withheld until the end of each chapter, so as not to interrupt the gameplay.

Sounds like a pretty simple, inconsequential idea, right? The repercussions of this sort of approach might be even greater than you think, potentially going as far as fixing what many dislike about achievements/trophies altogether – if other studios get on-board. Read on to see how the world of gamerscores and trophy collections could soon be turned on its head.

Free Game Friday: Run With It
By: | December 18th, 2009

RunnerHeader[Free-Game Friday is a weekly feature in which a writer from the Gamer Limit staff looks at a completely free game, and discusses his/her experience with it, allowing you to download it at the end. Feel free to check out our full schedule right here!]

I ask you, the readers of our glorious Free Game Friday Feature, what is better than a free game? I know it’s a tough question, as a free game is pretty awesome. But to give you an answer: two free games are better than one free game.

Which means that this week, Free Game Friday is not only better than usual, it is better than better than usual as I dangle the carrot of three free games. Not only that, but it’s themed, as they are all “running games”.

So join me after the jump as I venture into the fiscally responsible world of gaming. Read more… »

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is shaping up to be one of the most highly touted shooting games of 2010, and it’s easy to see why. And now DICE have unveiled an all new game mode entitled Squad Deathmatch, along with a new map right in the midst of the 300,000 player strong beta.

Squad Deathmatch pits four squads of four against each other, making for a more frantic and personal experience. When killed, the player can dive straight back into the action by spawning at a set location or on any squad mate’s current location.
You can view this new mode in all its glory in the video posted above. Only 3 months to go…

And now DICE have unveiled an all new game mode entitled Squad Deathmatch, along with a new map, right in the midst of the 300,000 player strong beta. Not that I’m bitter or anything, but an invite would have been nice.

Black Rock Studio’s forthcoming racer Split Second has now been confirmed for release in May 2010.

To put it simply, Split Second is a game which features cars, racing and enough high octane explosions to fill a Michael Bay blockbuster. It features a unique gameplay mechanic known as the “powerplay” meter, which can be used to trigger events of explosive proportions, such as collapsing buildings, to make life that little bit harder for your fellow opponents.

It all looks very promising so far, so I will certainly be keeping my eye on this one as a self-confessed fan of racing and wanton destruction. In the meantime, check out the new trailer for a glimpse of what to expect.

Overdoing It: Sequelmania
By: | December 17th, 2009

Overdoing It

After taking part in Gamer Limit’s Piece of Heart event this month, I finally discovered just how much one could despise a game – or, in this case, a series – if he or she manages to play it for long enough. Having never before picked up a Ratchet & Clank title, I was more than convinced that I would be able to withstand the repetitive nature of the series, if only for the fact that I had never experienced it before.

How very, very wrong I was.

This got me thinking about how developers and publishers latch onto their “next big thing” and flog that horse until it’s dead, dried, and rotten. Too many innovative games have become whores of sequel-mania, more laughable than original. But how does this all come to pass? And when does “continuing the story” become nothing more than a cash-grab?

Splinter Cell: Conviction is shaping up to be one of the must own titles of 2010.  While all the attention so far has been given to the single player campaign, the game is actually going to feature an entirely separate co-op campaign as well.  It’s being described as a prequel to the main Sam Fischer story.

Ubisoft has just released the first trailer highlighting this multi-player campaign, and it looks phenomenal.  You and a friend will take control of two special agents, one Russian and one American, as you try to stop a rogue element of the Russian military from reeking havoc upon the world.  The trailer showcases many of the styles of co-op gameplay you’ll get to experience during the campaign. You can view it now in the video above or download it on the XBLA marketplace..
