Being a big fan of Red Dead Revolver, I jumped at the chance to watch a gameplay demo of the Rockstar’s upcoming Red Dead Redemption when I attended PAX this year.  Despite an impressive inital showing which highlighted a huge open world (even larger than San Andreas), the state of the early build I saw had very little to offer in the way of things to do outside of the mission structure.

In the most recent trailer released, actual gameplay footage shown indicates that there may be a veritable stampede of gameplay elements present in the current-gen iteration of the spaghetti western IP.

Also, the technical and graphical elements were significantly improved from the PAX gameplay demo. Pop-in, rough textures, and other blemishes look to have been smoothed out dramatically.

Activities like hunting buffalo, lassoing and hog tying bandits, and taming wild horses, among others, seem to promise a varied offering of gameplay for aspiring digital high plains drifters. The prospect of viable horseback-to-horseback combat alone was enough to get me excited for what the final game may have in store.

I will, of course, reserve judgement until I get the final build in my hands, but I can’t help it if my inner Man With No Name is anticipating this title just a little bit more now. What do you think? Good, bad, or ugly?

looks like the GTAIV of the wild west

  2. @Ferahtsu
100% agree with you, it looks like they adopted a few things fom GTAIV’s playbook, which is not a bad thing at all.

That said, this game is looking incredible. I disliked Red Dead Revolver, but absolutely loved GUN. Hopefully this is more like GUN and less like the sporadic gameplay setpieces RDR offered.

    Man, I can’t wait!

  3. This game looks fantastic. I’ve been looking forward to a decent open world western for a while.

This game looked good from first trailer I saw but after seeing this just wow.

In order to peroprly rephrase comments, you need to be creative and clever. Convince the creator that just because the comment is very bland, it’s still something they need visible on their page.

  5. Yeah, oddly enough, this game is giving me a “GTA4 mixed with Oblivion” vibe. And I’m very much OK with that.

  6. While watching that trailer I felt like I was watching some type of program on the Travel Channel. It felt very weird.

In either case, I do agree with the rest of you that it will probably just be GTA4 in the Wild West. I don’t have a problem with that though. Sounds like a great idea to me.

  7. My jaw literally dropped. This is the first Rockstar game I’m interested in. After GTA3, I lost interest since I thought it was lame.

  8. WOW! I played that movie thinking it would be lame. This game looks absolutely amazing! Using a movie voice over guy to read the info was a good move also :)

  9. Oh yeah, this is fuckin incredible. Hope they have Tombstone style high noon standoffs as well as pistol tricks

Jehosh27 on October 20, 2011 Well, the ctonest is over now, but I think The Last Samurai would be great. You start off with a gun, and know next to nothing about swords. (how about the indian raid for the tutorial?) and as the game progresses, factions come into view, and you can side with whomever you want. Multiple, alternate endings, and even alternate fighting styles. Maybe Algren fights AGAINST the samurai at the end? it would be a very fun game, I think, especially if Bioware made it.
