left 4 dead 2 survivors Left 4 Dead 2 sells 2 million at retail

Today developer Valve proudly announced that its zombie slaying shooter Left 4 Dead 2 has sold “over 2 million retail copies” since its November 17 release.

The announcement that Valve sent out today reads, “[Left 4 Dead 2] appears to be on target to become one of the top selling Xbox [360] and PC titles for the month of November.” The developer added “sales to date are more than double the original [Left 4 Dead]” and that L4D2 has “already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders.” The announcement ends with “news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon.”

What I find interesting is that the 2 million copies sold only pertains to retail boxes. Who knows how many copies of L4D2 have been distributed via Steam. Anyway you cut it, there is no denying L4D2 is a huge hit.

If any of you are interested in getting a L4D2 night going on the PC, feel free to join the Gamer Limit Steam group. From there you’ll be able to find games with your fellow readers, as well as some of your favorite writers.

Jesus! I wonder how much they really make though? I’m guessing:
    10% goes to distributors/shipping
    5% goes to title sales
    15% to the publisher
10% to the console companies for rights
    so like 60% of the $59.95 (34.17 x 2mil =68.3 mil)
    - marketing/ads (a few mil?)
    - development costs (another few mil?)
    60 mil? =Profit

WOW! I can’t believe the game sold 2 million copies after all the fuss at E3 about how it was “too early” for a sequel.
