I still remember the day I got my Playstation, what a wonderful moment. Now we’re 15 years on from the birth of a gaming behemoth and it still feels like it was yesterday.

So to celebrate, Sony has set up its own Playstation 15th Anniversary Website. Read on for my defining Playstation moment and leave a comment with your own.

For me, the defining moment of Playstation is the first time I ever picked up and played Metal Gear Solid. Never before had I been so invested in a storyline than this. I genuinely cared for the fate of Snake, Meryl and Otacon. Hideo Kojima’s seminal work opened the gates for others to bring the blockbuster feel of a movie to consoles. On my second day of playing it was a Saturday, I started at around 10am and stayed in that same position until about 6pm that night until I was called for dinner. So I ate my dinner so fast I think I chewed about two pieces, then went straight back to Shadow Moses in my bedroom. To this day I still shout about MGS being my favourite game series ever.

So here’s to Sony for all those days off school, missed assignments, bloodshot eyes and hand cramps. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Remember to share your own defining moments of Playstation in the comments. Sorry, before you ask there will be no cake.

  1. For me, it was buying it at Christmas along with Final Fantasy 7. I played through that game so fast (six days after starting it!), I’d be embarrassed if I ever played games that much anymore.

  2. My defining moment on the PlayStation was picking up Xenogears. Sure, Final Fantasy is my all time favorite series, but an awesome combination of a great Square story and amazing, innovative combat system really made for an unforgettable experience.

On a side note, I burned out 3 PlayStation motors over the course of FFs 7, 8, and 9. I’m not sure if this is an impressive feat or if I just really needed to broaden my horizons (i.e get a life) back in middle school.

  3. Two of my most memorable PS moments have to be my first game which was Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer. I am a massive fan of games where I can collect things so the gems in the game gave me hours of amusement haha.
My second most memorable moment has to be hours and hours of family time spent playing Tomb Raider, continuously passing the controller round whenever someone died and everybody sitting in utter fear of the damn T-Rex boss!

  4. My defining moment on the playstation was borrowing Final Fantasy Tactics from a friend. After I returned it I had to go out and buy it and I played that game religiously until completion.

  5. I have to agree with you, Grahame. My defining moment was also picking up MGS for the very first time. It took me a while to get into it, but once I was set I ended up playing through it three times in a week just to be able to get the Solid Snake tuxedo.

    Love.

  6. I’m with Jamie – my PSX came with Final Fantasy 7, which had been advertised to death on TV for months. I couldn’t wait, and I wasn’t disappointed, loved it to bits, didn’t leave my room for months :D

  7. My defining PS1 moment was the day the system came out, because I was there to buy one. Yeah that’s right, I’m the first official Sony fanboy. I had faith in the system long before anyone else did.

  8. 1994? Holy snap, I was still playing my Genesis that year. In fact, I bought my PlayStation in 1997-98, probably towards the latter half of its life.

It’s funny how things turn out, now I’m able to buy a PS3 and 2 Xbox 360s in the same year.

  9. It wasn’t my “first” moment, but buying Tenchu and Metal Gear Solid at the same time (they were only two months apart). Stealth overload!

  10. Turning the machine upside-down so I could KEEP PLAYING RESIDENT EVIL without overheating the machine :)

  11. I would have only been 5 years old when the PlayStation came out, so I was glued to my SNES at the time. I eventually received my PlayStation for Christmas in 1998 and have been hooked on the brand ever since.
