Square Enix has always kept the box art for their Final Fantasy games fairly simple, but none more so than for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII.  Just released today, the entire cover is nothing more than a modeling photo of the game’s main protagonist, Lightening.

One thing that definitely catches my eye is the fact she’s wearing almost nothing below her waist.  I can’t get the feeling out of my mind that Square Enix is going with the old “sex sells” marketing trick.  I personally think they could put a picture of a pink bunny on the cover and the thing would sell 10 million copies, but what do I know?

360 shows more leg but the PS3 version will undoubtedly be superior :)

Final Fantasy box art, “simple”? You think so? Sure, in Japan, they’re usually just white walls with just the logo, but in the West, they’ve remained fairly lavish, since the US release of VII. Just look at XII’s lush movie-poster-esque design, or VIII and IX’s wide character line-up covers. I’d hardly say they’ve always been “simple.”

I also find criticizing the box art as a “sex sells” gimmick to be fantastically over-sensitive.

I really dont think this even comes close to FFX-2’s ’sex sells’ concept

FFX-2 was more “girlpower” than skin.

It was also more of a travesty than a game.

  5. I don’t see where this resembles the “sex sells” marketing technique. This cover is more simple than at least the last 5 Final Fantasy games that was released in the US. To me it seems more like throw up “BS headline” to get more readers technique than the “sex sells” technique going on here.

The clothing (or lack of) and the C cups just don’t seem to match the 15 year old face she has.

FF games have always bothered me a bit this way… the faces seem so very young, but the bodies and attire much older. It seems somehow awkward to me.

  7. I don’t understand — when did Tidus get breasts?
