Hello, this is a Fantastic read. I've undersood this sort of prevpectise, previous to this and you are excellent. I really like what you've articulated here, certainly like what you are stating and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still care to keep it sensible. I can't wait to read more in the future from you. This is really a terrific site. Keep up the beautiful work.

- For every homecoming game we have a enffdreit theme ( 08 was Disney themed) and the cheerleaders had their cheers centered around enffdreit songs. For example ?I just can't wait to be king? from the Lion King- We have the shirtless boys who paint numbers and names on their chests and stand out in the freezing cold- We have blackout games (Everyone wears black)- We embarass teachers and freshman at our Pep Rally every year. One kid always dresses up as our mascot = Rosie the Ram.- A lot of red, white and blue (our school colors)- The list goes on and on

I've yet to experiment with the Hardcore settings on Torchlight, but I plan to, because as stated, once you've gotten to around the 20+ level in the game, mashing 1 and mowing through your enemies just isn't as fun. Especially with rewards few and far in between.

@Chris
I've always held a great deal of respect for those who played Hardcore Diablo II characters lvl. 80+. Anyone who's a gamer must bow down to these daring gamers.

Haha, in all seriousness, amazing article. I loved Diablo II's hardcore mode.

This was a fabulous write-up, Andrew -- one of my favorites of yours!

Permanent death was a great element in Valkyria Chronicles. I found myself sacrificing valuable moves and attacks to save squad members from dying forever.

For games like Torchlight, I could see myself trying an option like that, but only after I've beaten the game once first. There are so many games out there that I want to play that having to restart because my wife asked a question or my cat wanted attention at the wrong time would be infuriating.

The Star Wars Galaxies info was facinating. Nothing brings out the griefers like a chance to completely ruin something that another player worked really hard to achieve.

Great read Andrew. I agree that permanent death would be great as an option, but it probably wouldn't work if it was required. I myself do not have the time and patience anymore to put toward a game that would wipe all my experience if I died.

This is a really great piece - good job! You raise some interesting points here. I've never really though about permanent death in games before, but I can see how they would certainly make for a drastically different experience.

Having never played Valkyria Chronicles myself (I know, it makes me sad too. You have permission to shun me), I was unaware of the permanent character deaths that resulted from your mistakes. Having a hand in whether characters live or die brings you a lot closer to the storyline and really makes you weigh your actions. I think this mechanic would be great to see in other games, to see what other people do with it. I feel there's a lot of potential for this.

At the same time though, I definitely think in some cases, especially when it's your own character, permanent death should be an optional feature. I know I certainly don't have the patience, sometimes.
