Today developer Undead Labs announced that it’s planning to “create the definitive massively multiplayer online zombie game (MMOZ) for console gamers.”

While this looks like a highly ambitious project, it seems to be in good hands. The new studio was founded by Blizzard veteran Jeff Strain, whose accomplishments include being part of the team that brought us such classics as Diablo and StarCraft. Also, according to the press release, Strain formed “the initial team and kicked off development on the wildly successful MMO World of Warcraft [in 1999] while taking on the roles of team lead and lead programmer on the project.” In 2000, Strain left Blizzard with two others to found the MMO development studio ArenaNet.

As of right now, Undead Labs has yet to announce any release date or platform for its zombie MMO. The company hopes to “pioneer a new development model that will create a new breed of MMO built from the ground-up for console gamers.”

The press release stated: “Undead Labs is committed to bringing to life an MMO loaded with action, humor and, of course, a whole lotta zombies, because the world doesn’t need more dragons. Nothing screams funny quite like wading into a group of rotting zombies with a lawn chair and a box of sharpened #2 pencils, and nothing says fun quite like doing it with your friends, whether online or on your couch.”

What do you guys think about this? I know I’d love a zombie MMO, however I’m a tad bit skeptical on how the game will actually play out. The trouble with zombie games is they tend to get redundant, and nothing kills MMOs faster than redundancy.

  1. I think it could be pulled off. Whether it will or not will have to be seen. Create a huge world and throw in 3 ro 4 zombie mobs and randomly move to different zones while they’re not in the zones you have to get quests and such, some quests maybe trying to rush into the zombie mob to kill a zombie who looks like someone famous. Other quests could be rescue kid from zombie invested abandoned hospitals. Then you got your normal quests. Only thing i can’t figure out is how a leveling system would work in that idea. Scratch idea out…

  2. “MMO loaded with… a whole lotta zombies, because the world doesn’t need more dragons.” I think we’ve seen our fair share of zombies in the past decade, let’s focus on vampires and Warewolves. I’m talking New Moon style.

“nothing says fun quite like doing it with your friends, whether online or on your couch.” Awkward…

  3. It is hard to say whether or not this will be successful, but its a interesting approach towards a mmo. If it was more pvp driven it could be cool to see a zombie side and a team to expel the zombies. Different quests to take out the leaders of the remaining human race and vice versa. I think the hardest thing with zombie games is a variety. The one thing I hated about L4D is the same ol’ zombie one after another with only a handful of unique ones. Why not have like some crazy zombie who was a guy on steroids previously and goes nuts? Or like the military taken over by zombies and they still retain their skills. Hm..

  4. I always love seeing that header image, as it was taken right here in Austin, TX!

More on-topic, the success in zombie games so far has been driven by the visceral nature of the action and (let’s be honest) the gore present in the visuals. Dead Rising and L4D thrive on the tension created by the combat, and I just don’t see a MMO delivering that.

  5. What do I think about this? I think I’m sick of zombie games!
