sky

I finally got my hands on Sky Player after its launch on October 27th. The new service for the Xbox 360 was removed after Microsoft and Sky experienced technical issues over the “phenomenal demand”.

In a statement last week on a Sky Player Blog, Sky offered compensation to those who had already signed up to the feature, yet were unable to access the services on offer. I was one of the many unfortunate people unable to access this service until now. So join me after the break to see its features in action.

The Retro Revival

Retro Revival TMNT

It’s easier to recycle an old idea than to create something original.  Musicians know this.  Authors know this.  Game developers certainly know this.

Video gaming has now reached a point where the early (and even the not-so-early) games can be looked back upon with a sense of nostalgia – a longing for the good old days of the Golden Age of Gaming.  Pac-Man, Pong, Galaxian, Frogger, Tempest… these games were marching the front lines of innovation in an unestablished, and almost comically different, industry.

Wistful game geeks today have an average age of 29; they recall their early gaming days with a fondness usually reserved for first loves or lost pets.  Leave it to game companies to take advantage of our doe-eyed sentimentality by selling us things we’ve already bought.

Lego Rock Band Title

The concept of bringing together Traveller’s Tales and Harmonix to create a “family friendly”, LEGO-themed Rock Band game is one that seems far-fetched, at best.  They are two completely different developers that do not tend to share the same fan base.  How would a coupling such as this be able to create a game that could satisfy either group of fans?

I myself walked into this review expecting nothing more than a Rock Band clone with LEGO characters, but was shocked to find so much more.  Both developers have managed to fuse together what they do best to create a unique rhythm game experience that appeals to both young and old. Read more… »

Today Konami Digital Entertainment announced that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, a remake of the original PS1 Silent Hill,  will arrive December 9 of this year.

For those of you who don’t know, Shattered Memories isn’t just a remake, but rather a reworking of Silent Hill. The awkward combat elements have been removed, leaving players to rely on their wits, a cell phone and a flashlight to guide them through the spooky puzzles. Read more… »

FF13 Release Date

Square Enix has just given millions of JRPG fanboys a reason to scream for joy like a bunch of little school girls with the announcement that Final Fantasy XIII will be releasing in North America on March 9, 2010 for both the Xbox 360 and PS3.  Considering the Japanese version launches in mid December, this is quite a quick turn around for a company who enjoys taking their time with game translations.

They have also announced new information will be released on the 13th of every month until the game launches in what they are calling the “Lucky Number 13” Campaign.  To see the first incredible video from this new marketing campaign, hit the jump.  Read more… »

MW2Airplane

[Needless to say, there are a few spoilers in this article, but I shall try to keep them to a minimum.]

The significance of Modern Warfare 2 and its drip fed pre-launch information are nothing without the controversies that have followed its tumultuous path to existence. We’ve had price concerns, format concerns, distribution concerns, and most recently, content concerns regarding the much lauded “Airport Scene”, in which the player becomes part of a terrorist attack.

There were reactions from all corners of the media, with many lambasting Infinity Ward for scratching the still soft and throbbing sore on the belly of America’s national psyche. Others simply questioned the point of the level’s existence, claiming that it was nothing but another gear in the Activision hype machine that has consumed the media for the past year.

I take a different stance, I not only appreciate, and frankly, applaude the decision to include the scene, but I personally think more games need to break invisible taboos, and stop being afraid of the backlash that may or may not follow.

New Lufia game announced
By: | November 13th, 2009

gam_lufia_580

Here’s something I thought I’d never see. In the most recent issue of Famitsu, game developer Taito announced that they’d be making a new Lufia game (the title picture says Estpolis because that’s what the series is called in Japan). Keep in mind that while most news sites will tell you that Square Enix is making a new Lufia game, that’s because they own Taito. Thus, the possibility is that there won’t even be a Square Enix logo on the game if it comes stateside. No specific platform has been announced as of yet.

This is a pretty unexpected move, in any case. For one, it has been nearly eight years since the last game was released. Furthermore, after the success of Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, the series has seen two games canceled far into development, and two other installments that failed to replicate the second installment’s glory.  The series has seen hard times, but things might be looking up for the newest iteration.
