Fans of Need For Speed: Shift are in for a tasty treat, as a free downloadable “Legendary Car Pack is being prepared for release on December 1st for Xbox 360 owners and December 3rd for PS3 owners in Europe. PS3 players in North America will lag behind for a change until December 10th, however. The pack is set to feature the following vehicles:

  • 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427
  • 1967 Shelby GT-500 (Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds, but not the right one)
  • 1969 Dodge Charger R/T
  • 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T
  • 1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV

In addition, the DLC will also include a new Team Racing mode, whereby two teams of up to six players can compete against each other online. Not a bad deal, when you consider Midnight Club: Los Angeles previously offered similar car packs for a fee, although it has recently been offering free bonus packs of police cars.

You can view a demonstration of this new mode in a newly released trailer after the jump, complete with the usual nauseating narrator.

In the history of gaming, developing quality AI partners has always been a tremendous challenge.  While very few dev companies can pull off the miracle, many fail utterly.  And no matter how grand Valve’s latest title may seem, it suffers from incompetent AI as well.

Since Left 4 Dead 2 focuses on multiplayer, we can never get too upset toward dumb AI.  In fact, the only people to blame is yourself for playing single-player in the first place.  Nonetheless, this is quite hilarious and should be seen by everyone. Read more… »

Today developer Undead Labs announced that it’s planning to “create the definitive massively multiplayer online zombie game (MMOZ) for console gamers.”

While this looks like a highly ambitious project, it seems to be in good hands. The new studio was founded by Blizzard veteran Jeff Strain, whose accomplishments include being part of the team that brought us such classics as Diablo and StarCraft. Also, according to the press release, Strain formed “the initial team and kicked off development on the wildly successful MMO World of Warcraft [in 1999] while taking on the roles of team lead and lead programmer on the project.” In 2000, Strain left Blizzard with two others to found the MMO development studio ArenaNet. I find the word “New” in the New Super Mario Bros. games on Nintendo DS and Wii to be incontestably ironic. This is partly because they won’t be “New” forever, and partly because these “New” games are deliberately made in the style of some of the oldest Mario games. There’s something peculiar about calling something that feels old “New”.

The New Super Mario Bros. games have really done a great job in taking the old-school style and making it feel new and fresh. I’m happy to say (for once about a retro game) that is wonderful for blending the feelings of nostalgia with a gaming experience that doesn’t miss the point; the old-school games are fun, but not for the sake of being antiquated.

Ode to Minions

Many of us have spent countless hours slaughtering the hordes of enemies in video games who get in our way.  We snuff them out of existence in a heart beat, yet all they were doing was performing a task someone else ordered them to do.  Those goombas and piranha plants are someone’s mother, father, son, daughter, brother, or maybe even sister, but we never stop to consider that.

Matthew Taranto, who writes the online comic Brawl in the Family, cares about all those dead enemies and their families.  To celebrate his 200th comic he’s actually written a song dedicated to them entitled “Ode to Minions.” It’s a heartfelt tune about all those hard working bad guys who are simply trying to work a 9-to-5 day job to put food on the table.

Come on inside to watch the “Ode to Minions” music video.  You’ll never look at bad guys the same way again. Read more… »

Noby Noby Jupiter!
By: | November 22nd, 2009

Don’t have any idea what the above title means? Thats ok: your ignorance will probably save you from tons of nightmares.

The PSN sensation Noby Noby Boy contains a rather cool feature: every time you eat objects, and report them to “Girl”, the entire world has a chance to unlock new planets and locales: just recently, the community unlocked the planet of Jupiter. Even though a multiplier was added to gamer’s scores so they’d reach it faster, it’s still nice knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself! Read more… »

In case you haven’t heard of Love Plus, it’s a DS dating sim game from Japan utilizing a real-time calendar for your digital girlfriend.

Popcap’s success knows no bounds. Many companies have tried to emulate their business model, and have failed miserably.

One of their greatest successes is Peggle, a pachinko-style action game that was ported to the Xbox Live Arcade earlier this year. Popcap is following up on their bid for multi-platform domination, and just opened up the sequel, Peggle Nights, to more platforms. Read more… »

All of the furor over LFD2‘s censorship in Australia has caused a righteous uproar, both domestically and internationally. Since it seems that Australia has begun to take over China and Germany as the king hate-state of video game hatred, let’s get some facts straight.

Australia’s OFLC ratings board, who are mandated under law to provide a rating for every single film, and game, released in this country, are provided with inconsistent and outdated guidelines. There is no R-rating for games, so titles, even those with excessive language, violence, and sex, are squeezed into an inappropriate classification.

Not a day goes by that I don’t read a blog or a news post that makes blanket statements or groups Australia with other regions that regularly censor content. This is not the case. I’m not by any means defending our system; it’s deeply flawed and in need of change, and I’ll explain how and why.
